how can i tell which firmware to download for the x5 camera, x5 or x5r

X5R is for Zenmuse 5R camera while the X5 is for the X 5 camera. You can see the difference at this link: http://www.dji.com/products/compare-zenmuse

Simply find the one that best represents your camera and download the firwmare. As you have mentioned you have a X5 camera, that is the bottom yellow outlined firmware is the one you want.
