Parallel to the ground can cause a bounced secondary signal therefore keep it mostly perpendicular just like the manual says exceptions are if you are flying right above or at a steep up angle from the RC control.

Yes, for maximum range and reliability, the antenna should point skywards with no obstructions between it and the Phantom.
