Anyone know if there's a ND-filter for the Phantom 3 Pro/Adv camera? I've seen some official DJI-sample footage where obviously no ND-filter was used (you see some jello, like at 00:19 in ). That makes me believe there's no ND-filter available. If there was they would have used it. I think a ND-filter is included with the Inspire 1. Right or wrong? Would the same ND-filter fit a Phantom 3? Will there be an official ND-filter available? Would it even be possible to attach an aftermarket ND-filter? Does the camera have threads? ND-filter is crucial for me. I use it all the time on my P2 with GoPro Hero 4 Black, otherwise I get jello no matter how well I balance my gimbal or props.

Buy some Rosco ND film. Tape it on. Or buy an extra lens cap cut out the center and put in a piece of ND film

I've had ND-film on my GoPro, it didn't work great (got some weird distortion and a bad tint). I want a glass ND-filter, preferably anti-glare coated.

The inspire 1 comes with an ND filter but it is not strong enough for really bright days. We have been asking for stronger ones. I am worried that they will not have an ND Filter for this camera. It is the same camera as the Inspire 1. That could be a problem.

I guess the internals are the same. But I'm not sure the Phantom 3 camera will take the Inspire 1-filter? I don't think the Phantom 3-camera has threads (which I believe the Inspire 1-camera has).

I could do that, but ND-filters should be as neutral as possible. I could buy a real ND-filter and try to cut it down to make it fit on the Phantom 3. But I think DJI should have included a professional ND-filter, at least with the Phantom 3 Professional, or at least offer one as an accessory.

The P3 camera has a removable lens cover.  It appears to have some tint to it but it is not as dark as the Inspire ND filter.  I am sure someone will come up with a custom solution as they have done on the Ispire.

Is it recommended to fly with the lens cover on? I'm thinking the gimbal might be out of balance or that you stress the gimbal motors?

Snake River Prototyping do good quality, glass filters for the P2V+ so it's only a matter of time before they do the same for the P3.
http://www.snakeriverprototyping.com/v-series-filters

The real question (which hopefully Tahoe_Ed can answer for us) is what diameter the lens barrel has on the P3?

DJI state 20mm in the P3 specs but not sure if that includes the actual lens barrel?

Does anyone know how that measures against the diameter of the P2V+ camera? Can't find any specs on that?

In simple terms, it reduces the amount of light coming into the sensor and therefore allows the photographer/videographer to select combinations of aperture, exposure time and sensor sensitivity which would otherwise produce overexposed pictures.

Especially helpful when shooting sunsets or during very bright days and you don't want to have a washed-out scene from too much sunlight (not often a worry here in Sweden... )

That is Disapointing that DJI did not think to include one. Please shoot an email to corporate for us and have them manufacture an ND filter for us. It is kinda silly not to have one ship with the "Professional" model.

That is true, but the most important factor for me is that I can have a longer shutter time on the camera, which removes micro vibrations (which is causing jello in the video) by "averaging" it out.

And, Im sorry, Im such a noob, what is jello?

It's caused by the way a CMOS-sensor catches the picture, line by line. If there are movements while the pictures being read you get a "wavy/jiggly" picture. In a movie it shows up as if the picture was made from jello.

You can see what it is here, and how to get rid of it with a ND-filter:

Yes that's what it can look like without gimbal and with unbalanced motors/props. You will never see that level of jello in the P2/P3 with a gimbal. But there will be some jello, especially if a little windy and when flying over places with details (like forest/terrain). That's why we need ND-filters .

Tahoe_Ed, could you please confirm whether the P2V+ and the P3 have the same lens barrel diameter?
In other words, is the P3 lens bigger in size than the P2V+ one?

It would help people like myself enormously who are stuck with old P2V+ filters and would like to put them on a P3.

Thanks!

The front of the DJI Phantom 3 Pro/Adv camera is an UV-filter that unscrews. It can fit a little tight for the first time you unscrew it. I used a part of a rubber glove the first time to get a good grip, turning it counter-clockwise.

I offer ND-filters at www.PhantomFilters.com that can be installed inside the UV-filter.

I agree.  And... The from glass lens on the P3 unscrews.  You can probably just cut out a circle of ND media and place it inside the glass filter and screw it back on.  Easy way to add an ND behind the glass.
