So... what do you think about my lens-hood? It does not interest you?

Thanks for reaching out and mentioning your idea. It looks like you said the hood touches the ground when you power it on and the gimbal calibrates. That would concern me. I am not at my computer but I want to cut out your hood and try it out and see if I can integrate that design too.

I am traveling today but I hope to try it this week. Thanks.

@ditzlerphoto yes, the bad side of my idea is the hood touches the ground when you power it on and the gimbal calibrates. Only one solution in my opinion : to add 3D printed feet. No ?

@TiagoMatias It is adjusted to remain fixed. No need fixing.

What is this ND filter and what are the benefits?

ND is like sunglasses.
You want to be able to have a constat shutterspeed arround 1/50sec.
and with a constant aperture of 2.8 this is impossible in daylight.

I guess you need to know a bit about cameras to understand the implications.

This is a short little video I made yesterday to show you how to use my neutral density filters I designed for the Phantom 3. It is rough draft but it might help some people that are new to this.

This shows you how to install the filters and how to switch to manual contol in the DJI Pilot app and also what filter to use and how to make sure you are using the right one.

Triple pack with the metal tin to hold them in, as shown in the video is now available.

Double pack - 2 rings, 6 filters with metal case

Ok I ordered one from DJI last week after have tried some plastic ones. It´s just not the same with plastic as real glass. Those plastics I tried gives all sorts of diffractions and other odd stuff. There are no shortcuts here.

I did buy ditzlerphoto's ND filters.

I used the filter for the first time some days ago, but i won't be using them again. The filters are super but if your filming mountains and stuff the EV won't stay at the level you want.

I don't see the need for ND filters if your not filming a sunset or the horizon.

Agreed.

@aburkefl, On your recommendation weeks ago I purchased some from phantomfilters.com.  They arrived quickly.  As I said in a different thread - Beware, they come in the white envelope, which I promptly sorted into junk mail, not recognizing the clear "phantomfilters" logo on the front.  I discovered them a week or more later, when I was sorting my junk.

Used the ND4 last night for a late night Alaskan sunset, while filming urban fisherman.

My screw on/off P3P lens cover came off with medium resistance, as was expected.  Slipped the ND4 in and went flying.

And as you point out, the accompanying literature has some great pointers.

You do realize that employing ND filters under variable exposure conditions won't work, right?

If you apply a 3 stop ND filter in bright sunshine, then clouds roll in, and you're in manual exposure control, you're going to be underexposed.

What exactly does a ND filter do?

There are like a sun glasses for the camera,in that way the camera sensor can see better.I sell this one's very cheap and a very good quality if you want to try.

Absolutely! However, if you're already running manual mode, the change is more or less trivial and your exposure is back on track. That's one of the sanest reasons to be running in manual mode *all* the time!

Yes, and that is why i don't see the reason using the ND filters.

Not sure I understand. ND filters are essential when shooting video in bright sunshine. There is no other way to set your shutter low enough to make smooth video, especially with a fixed aperture camera like that in the Phantom 3.

At ISO 100, the "Sunny Sixteen" rule dictates a shutter speed of 1/100s at f/16, which downscales to 1/3200s at f/2.8 (the fixed aperture of the P3), which is a full 6 stops too bright for 24fps video.

Unless I'm missing something...

Now, when you are in variable light conditions, you need to be able to quickly switch your exposure settings (much the same as you would without an ND filter), otherwise your'e going to have seriously under-exposed videos.

You and I (and many others) are in definite agreement. One can only assume that those who seem to have no need of a neutral density filter do not live in an area blasted with bright sunlight. Either that or they're shooting sharp, crisp video (i.e., with no motion blur) and don't realize what they're missing.

Just got my DJI ND4 filter and upon initial flight seemed great. Will do further testing but initial impression was positive. Installed easily and looks factory. Packageing was poor, expected to be in a protective container. Everything I have gotten from DJI was in a nice box but this was shipped in a foam block in a plastic bag. I will be looking for a container to store this or stock cover at local camera shop.

i bought those taco filters but only the ND8 and ND16, dont need ND2 or ND4s. Maybe i will need the ND32. ND16 could be to weak for a bright summerday. I looked trough the Taco RC ND8 filter and compared it with my SRP ND8 and the SRP is is a bit less clear and slightly more yellowish while the Taco is clearer and slightly less dark. So the filters are not identical.

David,
Thanks for the reply.

Yes. I accidentally crashed my Phantom 3 when I launched from a bunch of steel under a wooden platform. It was a IMO calibration error and it flew 84' till it's crash a few seconds later. It was enough to knock the battery out of the Phantom but the filter was still intact and the camera was fine too.

If you break them I will send you a new one.
