Maybe you can borrow this, or wait for the new "DJI Flying Chair"

The footage was gorgeous, right up until the CFIT (controlled flight into terrain).  Question - did you maintain line of sight on the drone until the crash?  It appeared to be VMC right until impact.

Now that's about as sad as watching Ole Yeller.

Get a fishing line down there. Get someone else with a Mavic to help guide your hook to the crash site. With the way my casts end up in trees as much as water I think I'd have a pretty good shot at recovery. How far from the edge horizontally? Maybe a kite pole with plenty of line you could lower to the spot? Maybe a coordinated rescue effort with a number of drones holding a line with a hook at the end? Seems someone would be up to the rescue challenge. That's got to be worth something in hero points and media time.

I would rather have seen it smash against the rocks and know it was dead than have it laying just out of reach in perfect condition.

By the way, the video started real nice. I would have liked to have seen the completed project.

I hope you're good at accurately casting a line over 380 feet, to a target you can't see, that's hidden in bushes, and that you don't really know where it is in relation to where you are standing! If you are, come on over! If we could see the Mavic, we might be able to hook it. Part of the problem is, you think you know where you are in 3D space, but you really don't. We have tried to locate it several times, and have a rescue drone that'll carry it back to us:
  • If we can actually find it
  • If it's not buried in the bushes
  • If we can successfully hook onto it
  • If our rescue drone doesn't become another victim of the terrain

It's been on the mountain side for over 2 weeks now. It's been rained on, fogged on, and stuck out in the salty air for a long time. It didn't seem to be damaged when it went down, but it's gonna be pretty nasty right now!

I agree, the footage was really nice. That was shot D-Log,n so the colors are really muted. With good color grading, it could have been awesome.

The aircraft was in line of sight, until it got swallowed  by cloud. As I said in a previous reply, it's really hard to judge where you are in 3D space. We've successfully flown a search drone to the exact (within 3 feet) GPS coordinates of my crashed Mavic Pro... and then reduced altitude to within 7 feet of the aircraft. As the search drone descended, it did not appear to be going where we thought it was going, because of all the converging and diverging lines of the mountain walls... It was a really weird optical illusion! Even when apparently sitting just 7 feet directly above where my Mavic was lying, we couldn't see it. So, flying the Mavic was line of sight as I flew it horizontally across the canyon, but when I started to make it descend, the optical illusion came into effect, and I thought it was going through the hole in the clouds, but it didn't, it went into the clouds and the mountain ate it.

I'd love to try that... But I couldn't get it close enough to the canyon walls!

I doubt there was any injury to the Mavic at all... it's just impossible to get to.  So many people tell me to just climb down and get it. I've taken a few to the crash site, then they change their opinion... "Oh, no... it's gone! You can't climb down, or up there!"

Seems someone could set up a business for specialised drone recovery tied into an insurance policy. Nudge, nudge DJI... ;-)

Yup, have been flying R/C since I was a kid. This was my first quadcopter with FPV, GPS and self-leveling capabilities, all my other aircraft are fixed wing sporty plans, or very basic quads with no brains whatsoever. I'll be replacing it when my next credit card cycle begins (December 6th)!

Would DJI transfer the DJI refresh to the new drone?

They have given me a small discount on the next one, and will transfer the DJI Care Refresh to the new done.

RIP Mavic Pro. Sorry for your loss. It appears you are close to accepting the hard facts and will soon acquire a replacement.   Don't give up hope on the recovery though, it just may still be in working order (or repairable). I'm in Cali too, not in Canada. Don't know why my profile says Canada.
