If you are looking to register your drone, be sure to go to the right website, which is here:

FAA

The other day I almost fell victim to a scam site that was charging up to $199 for registrations.

It didn't make any sense why so much, but if a scam, which it was, makes total sense now.

The thing is the website looked legit and mirrored the FAA's.

Thanks for the heads-up...  I sent 5$ for the P3S...  Just got a spark now... I'll try reg. after 1.1.18 or when the temp. is above 40. Hard winters here, Today in the 50's.... all downhill now. Tomorrow lake effect snow, temps 30 to 20 f. this trend last till March... Cheers

These days the FAA is almost with the scammers.
Their website still tells you that you have to register your drone although that was struck down back in May 2017.
There is currently no requirement to register with the FAA for recreational flying

They pretty clearly state the exception and provide a link to the recreational info page.

They have nothing about it here on their main registration page: https://registermyuas.faa.gov/
One would have thought they would have closed the web page down but it's still running and taking money from suckers that don't know their registration is no longer required.

I have seen a small mention of it on another of their webpages but can't find that one now.

You need to register your aircraft if it weighs between 0.55 lbs. (250 grams) and up to 55 lbs. (25 kg) and you are not flying under the Special Rule for Model Aircraft.

And there's a link that leads to this:

You don't need permission from the FAA to fly your UAS under the Special Rule for Model Aircraft, but you must always fly safely. You may elect to register your UAS to help in the recovery of lost equipment.
