Not documented or endorsed by Apple but iPad Air 2 will play 4K .MOV files from the Inspire.

I know the ipad air (not 2) can also play 4k with some apps.
But watching from the app a movie is not possible? Or only 1080p?

I guess yes. Since I know that ipad air and ipad mini 2 are approved to be able to support 4k playback.

Pretty sure you are right .

Recently tried loading a few 4k clips from the inspire to photos app on my iPad mini retina , it loads , plays and looks good but it's not being displayed in actual 4k res.

I looks as though everyone has answered you.

Just to be clear, The Apple iPad series will have no problem playing back the 4K footage but it is only showing the content at 1080p resolution. You will need to see this on a 4K device, such as the latest TV's that support this format. Smaller devices will be coming soon and I am sure they will be pricy for the short term.

It will play 4K video but scaled down to displays resolution, I think that's for all mobile devices including Android. Keep in mind older Smartphones/Tablets may suffer from low frame rate during playback since 30 Frames per second at 4K resolution is not easy.

You may also find problems if the file name is less than 8 characters.  The standard format naming on the Inspire camera does this, but if you manually change the file name before uploading to the iPad, it isn't recognised by the apple iPad devices.  Otherwise they just show in Photos on the iPad.

I think 1080p is the maximum for iPad Air. As some persons above said, to get your original 4K onto iPad Air, it needs to downscale 4K to 1080p before transferred to your tablet.

Any update prior to ISO 9.0 I was able to play 4K video on my iPad Air. When trying to play new and old videos an error comes up saying "unsupported video format this movie cannot be played because that video format is not supported." Anyone have some insight?

My newer iPad mini two retina  purchased January 2015 works fine, playing back all inspire videos .. The MacBook Pro retina 13" or 15" can run 4K to some 4K flat screen TV sets now..

I have an iPad Air 2 that is newer than your January 2014. I am getting the unsupported video format. All my inspire 1videos and Osmo videos that I am taking no longer work as well as other videos taken before updating The inspire 1 and Osmo. My OSX operating system has not changed.

Anyone find a way to get the Videos playing on the iPad Air 2.

I use an iPad app called "HD Player" to view 4K video files in both MP4 and MOV format on my iPad Air 2.  It's hard to find on the App store - the app icon is an orange square with black and white arrow stripes across the top.  You use an in-app feature to wirelessly transfer selected video files from your PC hard disk to your iPad wirelessly connected to your home WiFi router.  The videos used to play smoothly, but with latest update the playback pauses intermittently for a fraction of a second every couple seconds.   Beware - the files are full-size and it doesn't take many 4Gb video files to fill up the available storage space even on a 128 GB iPad Air 2.

Thanks for the kind words, I try to help when possible. I will be receiving my first 4K TV sometime this week. It would be awesome to see the Inspire 1 and P3P videos in true 4K for the first time
