     Sugar beets put our sugar cane out of business.  And our sugar cane had little trains with portable tracks that used to get the cane to the mill.  In the US, most of the sugar beets are grown in Louisiana.  (Now they have all our government subsidies.)  Only about 10-15 years since our last sugar cane operation closed down.

Yes, a couple of years back I visited FiJi and the story is the same there, but many of the rail lines are still in place, even though not being used. We still have a very large sugar cane industry in Australia, but it is very automated.
