Hi all,

I live in NW Iowa where the temps in the last week have ranged from -25 at night to -09 during the day..  is it recommended to fly in these temps and if so, what type of care should be given to the batteries...   I am looking forward to some flying time on the frozen lakes but do not want to experience any failures...

No it's not recommended by DJI, but I've read quite a few posts from people in Alaska who have flown successfully in the winter... main thing is make sure your battery is warm before launch...

The batteries will drain a lot faster in the cold but, more importantly keep your Phantom close in. Once the cold air saturates the electronics you will get GPS failure and disconnects. From experience you should get one short flight as long as the Phantom has been at 60 plus degrees for a while. The spec on the Phantom is 32 F at the low end.

I regularly fly in -10C and lower .... flight time has not been excessively affected as I generally do not like to exceed 15 - 18mins. But keep a close eye on the battery % along top line ..

There has been no effects to GPS or other items even when snowing. The only thing then is the flakes on camera lense melting and blurring the video.

What I do advise ... a) devise a way to warm up AC and battery immediately before flight. Do not stand either too long in the cold or you will be waiting and waiting for warm up !!

I have a special bag that runs of Car cigarette lighter socket or a 2S / 3S old LiPo battery ...

Cheap but does a great job ... you can get at least 2 P3 batterys in it and set the temp you want ..

Hi Mark, it is not recommended to fly the drone in such cold whether as permanent damage might be caused in the battery.
