Anybody else see this today:

Tuesday, January 16, 2018
"Starting today we’re changing the eligibility requirement for monetization to 4,000 hours of watchtime within the past 12 months and 1,000 subscribers."
https://youtube-creators.googleb ... outube-partner.html

Youtube is removing my monetization at the end of the month because I only have 250 subs. (and yours if you have less then 1000 subs) Even though I've increased by 150 subscribers since November. Ugh... it's like a punch in the gut.

Anybody with a DRONE channel please post them below and I'll subscribe to start saving our channels from de-monetization.
Here's mine;

http://www.youtube.com/c/bingerr

Add your channel and then sub everyone on the list. Thanks guys.

Ah, makes sense.  Someone was mentioning the difficulty they were having getting monetized and they have 8k subscribers.  I wonder if their movie review channel has 4,000 hours of watch time.  Seems like a crowded market.

Everybody wants to be a youtuber those days . This was obvious to come at the time anybody can buy camera and start doing vlogs and reviews . This industry will change and become difficult and only the strongest will survive like on all other markets , its just the way it is.

I will always consider youtube as a hobby, since I have a very good paying job that affords me many vacations and hobbies. However, I do enjoy shooting and making videos, and the little bit of pocket change it provides doesn't hurt either. Do I have delusions of becoming a youtube millionaire? Absolutely not, but if I have a few more dollars at the end of the year to buy some new equipment then I think it's time well spent.

But if youtube feels that I'm not worth the few dollars they pay me per month then I probably won't be so diligent about cranking out videos every time I fly. I use the small amount of monetization money as an incentive to stay on the ball and make quality videos. I guess that might change though.

In the UK at least, any Youtuber making money from their films would have to be PfCO qualified, and I believe that may well be in the US. Personally I would believe that that is just as great a threat, as once Youtube catches on to that concept they may well be even more rigorous.

Drone videos have such a niche viewer interest that unless unless you are pumping out review videos every week you will have a tough time keeping the YouTube overlords happy.  I've had my channel for 7 years and scraped together 854 subscribers, that's only 146 shy of the magic 1000 value.  But if your goal is to make money you need 10s of thousands of views.  In my seven years as a YouTuber I think I've earned $136.  Can't even buy a Phantom battery for that.  Anyway here is my link, subs will be gladly accepted.

That sounds harsh - if my math is right that means you need 1,000 subs and every single one of those subs must watch at least 4 hours or your videos every year... Thats one way for them to save money but hardly motivational, not that I even bother with YT these days and have never had a channel and never will.

Yes, if you're a new youtuber. But if you've uploaded in the past then you should still be be getting those views as well. I'm a little short on hours, but WAY short on subscribers. You're right though, it's a crappy way for youtube to UNmotivate it's creaters.

Yes I totally agree.
There must be another way for YouTube to separate 'the good' from 'the bad'.
I always liked the idea of everybody getting a small piece of the pie.
Right now I have four channels, each for a specific subject. (so I don't bother subscribers with other (non relevant) subjects.)
Together they will have enough to meet the criteria, but separately.....
So I'm thinking about losing (or freezing) two and hope the other two will pick up enough.

This monetization is indeed a nice way to generate a little money that gets invested in new equipment..
So indeed, please subscribe, I will do likewise

Thanks Montfrooij, it certainly is a lot to consider. I was also thinking of diversifying my channels (to keep my drone, and video game stuff, and travel stuff separate) but now I guess I have to leave them all on the same channel if I want to make money. I also have considered that this MAY push creators to really up their game to try to make it to the big league. There were a few video ideas that I've had for a while, but they always seemed too desperate. I didn't want to resort to cheap theatrics just for views and subs. But now I'm reconsidering. I'm not sure yet if that's good or bad. I guess only time will tell. (oh, and I'll sub back in 4 hours.)

Thanks for that last part.
It is a real shame, since these diversified channels give a much better viewing experience, but I will have to reconsider this strategy to.
No, I will never create video's just for the views. It is a hobby and will remain like that.
But it is (was) nice to generate some money with that hobby to invest back into it

I would love to invite you all to check out my channel and see if you would be interested in subscribing.  If the content on my channel isn't something you are interested in, then don't feel obligated to subscribe because I don't want my content to clog up your subscriptions feed.

In my experience, YouTube is mostly interested in watch time.  The more watch time a video gets, generally the more YouTube will promote it and the more it will get views.  So I would love to have any of you interested in the content on my channel, subscribe and watch HOURS and HOURS of my content!

https://youtube.com/kloogee

I've already started going through the channels that have been posted so far and some of you guys are putting out some pretty awesome stuff!  If its something you enjoy doing, don't let YouTube slow you down!

So how much cash did you actually generate? Just curious.

I think somewhere around $ 600,- per every 1 mln views. (Google forbids to tell exact figures...)
But that does depend on a lot of things, as it is much higher on some video's and lower on others.
So not a lot, but enough for me to replace some piece equipment every 2 or 3 years.
My last purchase (Mavic) was made with 2 years of revenue.

That is never a reason for me to create content, but it is a nice bonus while having fun making my video's.
So you will not see any 'clickbait' video's on my channels, only stuff I am happy with and would like to watch myself

Your train videos have a much higher view count than my UAV videos, by a factor of about 10.  Guess that's why I don't make any money, but i'm not doing it for money.

Money has never been a motivation for me and I don't make a lot of money with these train video's.

I make these video's because I like to make them and try to make the best I can.
But, the extra money that I get every now and then is welcome as the hobby gets rather expensive.
It's not worth the time that I spend making these video's, but as I said: that is not my main purpose
