I've just started a YouTube Channel dedicated to drone and scuba videos, and YouTube have just changed its rules. Now we need to have at least 1000 subscribers to get your content monetized.

But let's be honest I give up on those new rules - 4000h watch time in last 365 days - I have less than 300 ;) Not many people are eager to watch natural beauties I have less than 40 subscribers - even begging for subscriptions I'll won't reach 1K

it is true! most of the channels with big subscribers are "How To" or "Review" type videos. but hope is the last thing to lose!

Is it also true that your subs now need to watch 4000 hours of your videos a year in addition to the number of subs you have being at least 1,000 for the channel to be monetised? So with a thousand subs each and every one will need to watch 4 hours of your material a year. That is very harsh.

It is indeed - and rather hard to achieve by just asking unfortunately...

OMG - so that means you need to post 60 videos a year (5 a month) with every single video lasting 4 minutes and every single one of your 1,000 subscribers will need to watch every second of all 60, 4 minute videos over the year. It seems to me that the only people that will realistically reach that goal are the minor celebs with >10,000 loyal subs. Drones are also quite niche so this explains why smaller drone channels are now including all types of tech. That is quite bad of YT I have to say.

It seems that way and could quite easily backfire on them if the small fish swim away in big numbers...

yes it is such a hard move on YouTube. They are closing the inner circle unfortunately for new up and coming channels, regardless of how good the content is, if you are not "Mainstreaming" and have over 1K Subs and 4k Hours of watch time..we are left behind.. but we gotta fight! call upon our comunity and help each other out! i am a believer! and wont lose hope!  lets hope the chain grows and if we all share the posts and channels on social media it could add up as well.

That is one option for sure but I believe if the target is totally unachievable more than challenging from the outset then the target needs to change. I've taken an alternative approach as a small fish and unsubscribed from every channel, requested a full deactivation of my account with YT and will never use it again until they appreciate the effort of all and not just the few.
Good luck with it though, I hope they revise those expectations soon enough before more take my path.

Realistically the impossible is possible. A small fish like myself only wanted a place to show off my videos to family and friends, if I get paid great if not who cares. I picked up 20 subscribers and was like wow 162hrs watched awesome.  I never thought I would make money as it was never my intention. I’m happy to support folks and hope for the same.

I support on here and other forms of social media for sure but I don't use YT anymore and for good reason.

Because I’m getting ready to launch my drone business I use Facebook more to put out my videos. For the locals of course. Yt is for people who asked if you have a channel and probably will never look at it. But just in case they do. Lol

Don't full Yourself if we manage to reach today's goes, but they do not want to deal with a small player (which did not steak they're had and cement them in microwave ovens ). They'll change rules Again!
So You either accept their decision and continue showing Your hard work, enjoying community support and satisfaction or You just stop using Youtube - Facebook is not so good but more popular might be even Airvuz or DJI's one

I think the new YT rules are too hard for me to ever honor them. 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of view are high numbers, unless you have something really special to show on your channel. The videos we show each other here are no longer as special as they could have been a couple of years ago. And by the way - I don't care about the money... they were never the reason I created a channel.

Vimeo is really bad for many of us who are more rural and don't have gobs of bandwidth.  Lots of times, I can't even watch a Vimeo video.  YT barely streams at 720, and at times doesn't at all without heavy buffering.  On rare occasion, I can watch a brief 3-5 minute video if I buffer it up on YT first.
