how long will a new app take to get approved?

just curious. I was thinking of getting it - but if there isn't even any way of flying it... doesn't make sense...

It depends, 7-21days.

DJI tech saying within a week.. DJI had made a fix.. software and firmware update needed.

At this point they should just add anyone that asks to the TestFlight beta until the app is released.

Agreed. All of us early birds just have paperweights (unless you have android)  :@

Does it fly *at all* without it?

And I also heard someone say there is 'mandatory' registration, i.e., you "cant" fly, unless you register the machine via a cellphone, etc?
Is there someway of bypassing that? (I don't need/want to do that).

No, it does not fly without the app.  I did a manual compass calibration on mine and got the green lights signifying ready to fly ... But no motor start.  

It's just a very nice paperweight until the app comes out.  I'm mildly annoyed as I bought a brand new $799 iPad for the sole purpose of using with this quad.

Does anyone think the app will actually be done in a week like they say?

THE DELAY IS NOT APPLE, DJI KNEW THE LAUNCH DATE FOR P3, THEY KNEW THE LEAD TIME FOR APPLE AND NO LEAD TO FOR ANDROID!!!

DJI IS FULL OF *** AND WE WILL BE THE BETA TESTERS,

If you are in the USA, I suggest going to Walmart or any other department store and picking up a really nice pay as you go Android smartphone for under $50. Don't activate it. Just use it to run the app. The Motorola G is really nice for this purpose: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Verizo ... Smartphone/36182578
Note: This is just a stopgap measure. I prefer iOS devices. Having a decent Android phone is handy in case a third party app you want to try only runs on Android.

Ok I think maybe is like the Inspire
