On my Spark I was able to configure one of the remote´s buttons to switch the gimbal down to show the ground or bak to the regular straight-forward view.
It seems that this feature is missing for the Air? Why?
I think I just saw a video explaining the use of the programable button on the right. I think he said something about being able to set it to flip the camera up or down but all this info is starting to congest my 62 year old brain.

Yes, but the option for that is missing when connected to the Mavic Air. On my Spark it is available. :-/
I see that there is a “recenter gimbal” option, but not one to toggle between centered and looking straight down. Its one of the things I really like about the P4P’s we have for work, so +1 for hoping that we see it in a future firmware update.

Yes.
But still not reply from DJI, even my support-case was closed without any comment.
So if you use the scroll wheel will it not go straight down. And if you program one of the buttons it will go back to level. Or do you mean that you want it to point down almost instantly?

I mean almost instantly as it is possible on the Spark.
Press the button once it moves down, press it again it goes back looking forward.
