[size=14.666666984558105px]When I purchased my Mavic Pro, I dutifully registered at
[size=14.666666984558105px]FAADroneZone
[size=14.666666984558105px]I paid the $5 and received a registration number.

[size=14.666666984558105px]I recently lost my drone and went here
[size=14.666666984558105px]Lost Drone Form - Report Lost Drone - Drone Registration
[size=14.666666984558105px]This appears to be a government site (????). Yes??? Or no?
[size=14.666666984558105px]But they have no record of me. (Used the same email address.) I have to register again and pay $47.99. What an odd number?!
[size=14.666666984558105px]Suddenly I am suspicious. Is this a total scam?

[size=14.666666984558105px]Assuming it is a scan, to whom should I report a drone loss?
[size=14.666666984558105px]I lost it in the woods but know within 35 feet where it should be, and have searched for 3 days. So I am supposing someone found it and took it (with good intentions or otherwise, who knows). I had my registration info in the battery compartment (should they happen to look).

[size=14.666666984558105px]At any rate, I wish to report it as missing so that I am, in some sense, no longer the owner of it and no longer legally responsible should the other person fly it illegally.
[size=14.666666984558105px]Any thoughts?

Drone registration.net is not a government web site. Basically they charge you a fee for registering the drone on the faa site ...

For me is is a bit of a scam!

At the bottom of their page you can read:
As a service provider of aviation labels and professional document preparation services, drone-registration.net provides a simplified process to help our clients obtain a drone registration with the U.S. Government and properly label drones and other radio controlled aircraft systems as mandated by the FAA. We act on behalf of you (our client), and are not affiliated with the FAA. We are an independent site that was designed to assist in obtaining a registration number for you and supply labels and other products.

The legit site in the US start out from here and click register

https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/registration/
And by the way...  Professional is Section 107.  Recreational is  Section 336

and if I remember right, if you are recreational, you only register yourself.. not the drone.  So you can have several drones with one number

Ok, thanks guys.
I had already filled out my contact info (on the first page), but when it came to the payment page, it just felt weird, so I stopped.
Be as that may, is there any sort of government mandated (or recommended) procedure for establishing that a drone is lost, irrecoverable? Just in case the person who found it decides to fly it (and my registration info is taped to the battery compartment-- so it appears that I am still flying it)?
Brad B: thanks for the tip, I failed to notice that distinction when registering.

BTW: what happened with my first post in this thread, that the font size is stated explicitly? Something I did wrong while composing?

I've not heard of any government site to help find your drone.  But there have been TONS of postings on this forum about using the flight data from YOUR drone to locate where it might be.  I don't know how long ago this happened, but your remote normally shows a small box in the lower left corner that has a map showing where your drone is.  If that's still available, that would help you.

Thanks for tip.
I used that info right after the drone crashed into a tree. I was also shooting video, so I could replay the last 5-10 seconds of flight.
YET, somehow, I could not locate the thing. It was hung up in a tree, maybe 25 feet above ground. I kept my controller running, had to cross a narrow mountain stream, thoroughly soaking my feet & shoes, just to "rescue" the Mavic. But no go. The tree in question was obscured by some tall shrubs blocking the view and otherwise hindering access. While it was only 4 pm, it was still an hour ride back to my house, so I drove back, purchased a handsaw and branch looper, and the next day went back to the site.
Still no go. No find. Bizarre. It evaporated....   And I have been back two more times and cannot locate it.
I just have to assume that the wind blew it down and somebody picked it up (it is on a site that often visited by hikers).
Baffled and frustrated.
