While seeing how the Mavic Airs camera handles the golden hour, I got a little too close to a few geese and really came close to losing my drone and possibly hurting an animal. Lesson learned to enjoy the birds from a little higher and leave them alone.

Having owned geese, I can vouch for the goose coming out on top. Those are tough SOBs. I’ve had one by the scruff of the neck, its wings thrashing me, with another attacking. I had to use the thrashing one in my hands as a shield, before throwing it and hightailing it away.

Close call at 50 meters up!  The first pigeon was a few feet away, but the next one (middle and lower pictures) was came just inches away since I could make out details of its feather in my video capture.

I was around 10 minutes into my flight when the birds crossed my path. I was glad I didn’t hit it.

I realized later that, instead of saying that birds are hazards to drones, it is drones that are hazardous to birds (they’ve been flying long before there were drones).

I will be mindful of my flying area in the future and avoid flying if I see birds around.
