  • OK so I took my Mavic Pro out today and I had a fly away - Totally lost. Is there anyway that DJI have a GPS reading on it. If so can they pin point it and tell me the where about it has flown to.Even if it's to cross check my GPS. If you could help that would be great.

you can use the "find my drone" in the dji go app to see the last position of your drone

I would suggest uploading your Flight Record logs to the following site http://www.phantomhelp.com/LogViewer/Upload/
That will allow users here to help you out trying to find your drone and potentially identify what happened.

To access "Find my drone" you need to open the app. When the app gets to the page with the black on white image of the mavic air, at the top right of that page are 3 liines - click on that. Once opened near the bottom of the list is Find my drone - click on that. Once opened you will see a red airplane icon on a map - click on the red airplane icon and the gps co ords will appear in a pop up on that page. Thats your quckest accessable discovery option. you can zoom in on the map and hopefully some landmark features (like a path or rock outcrop or something) can help with location. also take a bit of time to remember how the wind was blowing - if it was a flyaway then there was wind - if the drone is not at the spot of the gps then you may expand your search down wind a bit.

Hi Chris, I'm sorry to read the flyaway. As discussed above, please try to use the feature of Find My Drone to see whether it helps. If still no luck, I'd suggest to contact our support to report if the drone is still in warranty period. You can start from here: https://www.dji.com/support Feel free to contact us if there are any further questions.

Hi Susan, Yep thanks for the info. Ok the update is I used find my drone and went to scout the field it was meant to be located in. But not found it. It's a wide area of open space so I will go up today and have another look. Thanks

It was so gusty yesterday, I wanted to fly and get some photos of the snow so I took my mavic pro up 50ft and brought it straight back down its not worth the risk.

Cheers Steve - Yep a little gusty...However there was a lull so I took it up. We are in the middle of demolishing our hose so I wanted to get a few shots in the snow. It was no more than 50ft. You local? if so it few off towards the a field in Steeple Lane!

By flyaway do you mean the Air went mental and flew off of its own accord?

Mine did this yesterday too (I'm in the UK - coincidence?) and it ended up in a tree - fortunately I managed to retrieve it.

Your mavic successfully enggaged RTH and was on RTH.
But Mavic Pro's gps speed is limited to 22mph and the wind you showed was 25 mph excluding gusts. Once it drifted further away, it disconnected.

You should not use or rely on gps mode on a windy day with long distance.. nexttime stick with sportsmode, if radio disconnects then it will switch to gps and RTH on its own and try to come back.

The max wind velocity did warn you and it says on the log to keep it in line of sight. The reason for this is because if you get a disconnect, gps rth speed is only 22mph.

It is a combination of faults but the drone did warn you aso.

Dji's gps speed is way too low and this causes drones to drift with the wind on disconnect gps rth.

But at the same time it warned you on high winds so you needed to keep signal on with line if sight. If you returned home manually with sportsmode then it would break through that 25mph easily with 40mph speed.

Anyway Chris lesson learnt

If it's a public area west of the last signal point, drone prolly landed there and since it's public then many people.

You've got to be more aware of the conditions you're flying in. This is no flyaway, this is operator error not taking the conditions into account while flying. I hope you find it, but this could cause serious issues if it were to wonder into unwanted territory. Fly safe!

Also if you want to fly a mavic pro on high winds, it is better to hack its gps mode speed to go fast. Even faster than stock sports mode for both modes. Gps RTH against the wind will always try to RTH up to the max speed of the mode.

Great info - What I didn't realise that the wind gusts were far to strong for it to come back on RTH.  - What I do know is when I launched to take shots of the house (40-55 feet) it was in a sheltered area and I didn't take into consideration the wind at the slightly higher altitude. I'll certainly put this down to experiance and know next time. I guess the snow was to much of a temptation! Thanks

OK Guys...... Stop Press!! So I went out this morning to have another search for the Mavic with Harry,( Partners nephew ) I looked in the last GPS signal location but it wasn't there. Taking in wind speed and direction we decided to go further a-field. After about 1 and a half hours and 422 meters away on top of a hill I found it. It was just sitting there as if it landed under control - No damage as yet...Just thawing it out.
Got to put it out there and put my hands up - I guess I was just to tempted by getting that perfect aerial snow shot - I'll think twice next time - We can all live on the edge but this time it was a bit to close for me....Anyways....I'm a Happy Chappy - Thanks for all your input guys.... Very much appreciated.  Safe and happy flying.

Congratulations!  What a great outcome! Bet you'll never make that same mistake twice.  Keep us posted once it thaws out if there was any other problem with it.

Thanks guys. All comments very much appreciated. Gotta say it’s not very nice being on the wrong side of the heart pumping edge!

Was it recording video as it flew away? Would love to see it, if it was.
Congrats on finding it!

Congrats! Indeed, we sometimes have to experience nerve wracking stuff to learn our lessons. But hey, you got it back. Be careful next time. Like what they always say, "Respect the wind'. And never underestimate them.

Thats great to hear - 422m wow thats a long way - appreciate you mentioning so we can put that data into our memory when considering future flyaways.
Now you have learned the same way most of us did - by experiance - very happy to hear you survived.

Do a search on this forum for threads about wind and flyaways - there are some valuable tips about flying in the wind and some what nots to do.

Thanks

You should fly against the wind rather than into the wind because if a problem occurs wind will bring it home naturally. Planes take-off againt the wind also (But avoid sport mode against the wind, except if there is a problem).

Good you got it back. What is interesting is that the Mavic did an automated landing - presumably when the battery level went to critical - in other words a forced auto-landing. A good lesson also in wind-drift under power - basically the craft will travel much further than one would intuitively think!
