I usually have RTH set at 40 meters. I'm not sure what happened here other than neglecting to check settings thoroughly.

If your quad is within a certain distance of the remote, I think something like 20 meters, I believe that it simply comes straight back.  How close were you when you hit RTH?

Very, very lucky! I set my RTH to 60m

Phew!  Too close for comfort - wires AND trees.  Default RTH for me is 50m, the maximum permitted height in much of France.

The drone gods were smiling on you that day!

I believe if you’re within 20 meters of the remote, it lands right where it is.

Ah yes, I think you're right.  Thanks. But, in this case the OP said he was hundreds of feet away, so my thinking turned out to be not the issue.

That was a close call for sure .⚰️
