you know how to take pictures man, what are your settings?

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated. I always shoot in manual mode. The white balance is an important one to get right. I would highly recommend setting this manually rather than leaving it on auto.

People snorkelling over a ship wreck in Perth, Australia.

Some footage of a ship wreck in Western Australia through the eyes of everybody's favourite travelling companion... The Mavic Air.

Howdy folks !
I thought I would share these extremley exciting photos which I captured with the Mavic Air, over 100 kms offshore from Western Australia. They images are of the largest animal ever known to have lived on Planet Earth - The Blue Whale.
The story behind these images...
I was unable to use my inspire 2 for this on the day, due to lack of space for safe take-off and landing on the vessel. Luckily I had the Mavic Air from the trial program with me in my bag. Because this drone is so portable and capable, I was able to capture the following images of such a rare animal, which would have been impossible otherwise. I had a tiny window of opportuntiy while the whale surfaced for a breath, before it's sounding dive. The speed in which I could deply the Mavic Air was key to me getting these 4 images.  There is very little drone shots of Blue Whales in general, but I'm pretty sure these may be the worlds first taken with the Mavic Air

I would like to also take this opportunity to thank DJI for choosing to let me keep the drone based on my content contributions. I am humbled by this, and very much appreciate it.

That is very nice of you to say. I have wanted to see a blue Whale since I was 5 years old. It took me 35 years, but I got there eventually   So glad I had the Mavic Air in my bag, as I couldn't launch the Inspire 2. I only had a minute or two unfortunately, but it was nice to capture something.

I would love to see one in the wild for sure but to have my drone in the air at the same time would be a dream. Thank you so much for sharing this experience and footage. Such a majestic creature.

With that Blue Whale shot, I firmly have to agree with Wachtberger that DJI handed this drone to the right person.  Fantastic job getting that bird up in the air in such a small window of opportunity.  I approve.

How stable is the Mavic Air to do long exposure pictures (what's the shutter speed you are using without motion blur caused by drone movement?

Do you need to use tripod mode to take long exposure shots?

I have a special license from DPAW to photograph and film marine mammals and fauna with a UAV. I run an aerial photography company here  in Western Australia. This special license allows me to get to a maximum of 20 mtrs from them. Although that distance is never needed especially if I was using the i2 with a 45 mm or the 14 - 42.

Thanks mate. The Mavic Air is very stable for it's size. Funnily enough, I fins it easier to take long exposure shots with it than with my Inspire 2 As long as the wind is not too high you will be able to achieve good results. The shutter speed used here was around 2 - 3 seconds as far as I can recall. You don't need to use tripod mode to achieve long exposure. Tripod mode just slows the drones movements to achieve cinematic video footage. Have a crack at it and let me know how you go.

Glad you enjoyed them!

Most of these images were taken without ND filters apart from the blue whale shots. I wanted to give people a look at what was possible without any additional aids.  I would definitely recommend ND filters. PolarPro do a nice set in a handy box at a reasonable price. Anything over water, needs a polarizer of some description for best results.
