Hi,

I am only able to wired connect wioth bottom USB port top the phone which is painful and unsightly. I am unable to use the side RC connection as it wont go past step 3 and connect.

I have tried 2 Android phones and both have same issue. Any ideas? Latest firmwares etc

More importantly are you able to charge your RC via the side connect!  

Yes i did that with the lead and little adaptor yesterday

I would be inclined to buy a new cable  (this works on the Air too)

... there are many posts on this forum about not able to connect device with RC using the side-port of the RC... I most cases the result of a bad cable. You can replace cable, but since there are a lot of problems with these cables....

Hey Chris, it looks like the cable issue. Please change to another working cable to see whether it helps.
