Hi all,

I’ve recently been working on a new video and have been happy with the picture setttings of 0,-1,-1 thanks to the advice do the Mavic Pro community!
I’m now working through what the best picture profile to shoot in. So far I’ve been using Cinestyle but I’m curious about the opinions out there saying to use D-Log.

Which profile do Mavic Pro users use? Is there a benefit over the other?

I’ve attached two videos. 1. Compares the Cinestye and D-Log. 2. The most recent video I’ve shot. I’d love to here some feedback if you think I could get better results in D-Log and more editing in post.

Thanks!

Great job Mini-G !  Your video comparison was superb. It leaves no doubt that the way to go is the D-LOG+LUT.

Hi,

I’d love take credit for the comparison but it’s not mine.
Which one do you use? Cinestyle or D-Log?

Thanks.

I really like the d-log plus the lut.
Now, in this comparison shot in the video, do you think the addition of a nd4 filter might have calmed down the brightness of the sky a bit?
Also, when they refer to the lut, are they talking about the 0,1,1 setting that you can set in the custom settings?

I used a ND8 filter on the day. I was trying to keep 25fps and 1/100th shutter.

A LUT is usually a preset that you can use in Premiere or Final Cut Pro.

I learned from tutorials that for editting the best was D-Cinelike at -1 -1 -1 with a white balance always corrected...can anyone approve?

I am an Android user and use Cyberlink Power Director (amateur here and learning), so I'll have to experiment and probably can find that feature in their program.

For sure always D-Log plus lut and or color correction.  That will always get you the best results but requires more post work.  D-Log has more information in the file than any other setting.  It is meant to have to do post work.  If you just want quick good footage without any or very little correction than Cin is good.  For higher details D-Log is the only way to go.

What was the White balance setting/custom you were using?  Seems to of been off a bit causing the sky to be brighter and also a ND16 may of helped the sky a bit also.  For sunrise and sunset sometimes using 8500k white balance is good.  Best to always use manual.  Really nice comparison I am still very new to this and am learning a lot from you and others.  From what I have gathered the D-Log will always look the best if done right in post processing.  It is not relying on the drone cpu to process and therefore retains the most details and colors.

I like Cinestyle but obviously the numbers look better to everyone using D-Log. I wonder why exactly?

Hi I was thinking the same.
I’m not sure if that’s just due to me not liking doing a lot of post production work.
Although, I’ve only shot one thing is d-log and maybe I just need to get better at colour correction.

I think post production is an art and requires lots of experience.

What do you use for post production? I use Adobe Premiere Pro 2018 but you know what isn't half bad is Microsoft Movie Maker?

I initially used LOG but the more I read about this (and also based on my footage analysis) - the more I think that LOG on Mavic is just a marketing trick.
LOG compresses dynamic range a lot and with 4:2:0 8-bit recording squeezed to 60 Mbps - leaves no way to correctly expand the dynamic range in post. Even on Panasonic GH5 with much better sensor and 2.5x better Mbps most of people do not recommend to use LOG. On GH5 the consensus is: LOG should only be used with All-Intra 400 Mbps 4:2:2 recording, otherwise D-Clinelike is the best.

Back to Mavic Pro. With its tiny optics and sensor the above considerations make even more sense.

Personally I no longer shoot in LOG and have switched to Cinelike profile.

I would also not recommend shooting at rates >30fps. at 50-60 fps "data binning" effectively reduces resolution twice

I really like Cinestyle but mainly because it allows you not much emphasis to do post.

Look Up Table is the phrase.

I would call it a "template" for contrast, colors, sharpness and so on.
