My first flight was successful but the farthest I could get it to go was about a half mile. Granted I am around trees and houses but I was about 300 ft in the air. Is it possible that it wont go any farther due to the trees and houses?

Yeah probably. The 2km (1.2 miles) is in outdoors and in an open area.  Houses,depending on how tall they are shouldn't affect your signal much. However depending on the type of trees can be 100 ft or taller. If you can't draw a straight line between you and your quad then chances are that there will be some interference no matter how high you fly it.  

Have you set the operating range within the app?

Just flew my P3 and got 8000 feet away. THOUGH, it is clear sky today and I was on top of the roof of a business.

That's really good. I'll have to try it in an open area and see what happens.
