Did you try just hovering rather than moving horizontally? If you showed the birds that you were not a normal experience, they might have not gotten so scared. You did must have done something that got them to be more accepting since they did not fly away in the other shots.
Flying animals that might hurt them do not move straight up and down or hover to much of an extent. This might have made them curious. Of course their first thoughts are that you are a threat but their curiosity will often get the better of them.
If you get a chance again, you might try hovering and very slowly approaching them directly. Then if you notice one of them move, zip away from them real fast. Be sure to rise in altitude a little bit so you do not go swimming! Then slowly approach them again. This might let you get much closer to them since they would think you are curious but they scare you.
Your POI around them was interesting and has some good lighting information. What a change, very interesting.
