Just crashed my Mavic Pro.

I’m trying to understand what went wrong.

I was taking pictures of a water tower, when I lost signal.

Home point was correctly set. It was supposed to go up and return when I lost signal.

Found it on the ground close to the water tower, with the battery off.

I suppose it hit the tower. But when lost signal, if it went up as expected, it was not to hit anything so high.

So Sorry to see the damage.
Your flight log should shed some light on what happen when you lost connection.(as said by Quadkid)
Were you just taking photos or videos? They might give some insight to what happen also.

After 3sec of lost connection your drone should of used the failsafe RTH. Was there any wind that day? If there was it could of forced the drone into the water tower as it ascended.

It sounds like it hit the water tower before it started returning home or the RTH altitude was not set high enough to allow it to clear the water tower. Either way, you should be able to figure out what happened if you check out the TXT flight log. Post a link back here if you need help deciphering it.

I don't see anything to radical to cause it to fall from the sky, you did have a week signal at 10m:33.6s but not long enough to trigger RTH before it fell. You might want to open another case with support and upload the .DAT file for them to look at, it can be viewed as an MS Excell file which provides a lot more parameter information. Looks like it probably hit the tree on the way down.

To get the MS Excell file you can click the D/load CSV link just below the map of the flight viewer and save it to your desktop, if you have MS Excell installed on your PC or MAC just double click the icon and it will open a spreadsheet that has all the specifics of the flight. As far as understanding all the numerical parameters I'm afraid it will take a Tech that can read them.

What was rth altitude set for?

It was set 30 meters. As I was in the same altitude of the top of the water tower, there wasn't any tree at that level, and 30 meters was enought to pass over the tower.

You were at 158.5 ft (48 meters). The craft would ‘ve used that altitude to fly back if rth.
It looks like the craft lost power and dropped. I would open a case with DJI.

Just a question.... if I set rth altitude as 30 meters, and I'm already flying at 48 meters, will it rise 30 meters above 48 meters (i.e. 78 meters) and go home?

It will keep the current 48 meters to fly back during rth.
If altitude was lower than 30 meters it would than ascend to 30 meters before flying back.

Dammed!!
Now I realize what happened. I misunderstood about RTH altitude.

I imagined that height would be added to the current flight altitude, before returning to home.

I was facing the top of the tower at 48m of altitude, so adding 30 meters would be fine to pass over it. But it went straight to the tower as I was already at 48m.

I learned it in the hard way.

At least, I hope this topic serve as an example to other people who did not know exactly how RTH altitude works, and avoid other crash.

Maybe DJI need to revise RTH function… to me, make more sense add altitude to your current flight altitude. Anyway, I didn’t think about other collaterals in changing this.

You were in P-mode and the obstacle avoidance should let the craft fly over the tower.
I do not see Rth initiated from your log.
Your log just stopped as off power was cut off. Like I previously said, power failure. Did you contact Dji?

I didn't contact yet.

It was getting dark, I'm sure that the obstacle avoidance would work.

I still imagine if it could be the CSC maneuver, as there is no clue that RTH started. By the way, if I lost signal, it won't be log in the RC or DJI app that RTH procedure was started, right?

This is the last picture before crash:

If you are already flying higher than your return home it will come back home at the high you’re at it will not rise 30 m from where you’re at.

I did not know you were flying at night. Obstacle avoidance may not work right in poor lights. The craft may not see it and just fly against the tower, if it was doing rth.

You are right, if the RC was disconnected the it won't record the rth. At least it would be showing like aircraft disconnected or something like that.

By the way, did you set the craft to rth or to hover in place when disconnected?
