While it is possible to damage the gimbal like this, it usually doesn't cause any problems if it doesn't happen often and you don't run the Mavic for extended periods of time with the gimbal lock attached. If you have trouble remembering to remove it, you could attach something like a long red ribbon to the gimbal lock so you remember to remove it.
