Can anyone tell me what's the mea ING of this icon circled?

It showed N/A yet my father's Mavic Air shows sometimes this icon with a number of over 5000m...and then it switches to VPS...?

I think that this is distance to your RC (phone) when it has precise enough GPS fix (not to be mistaken with aircraft GPS). If it shows N/A - your phone does not have precise enough GPS fix.

This is the altitude that the drone is flying above the ground within the detectable range of the downward vision sensors (VPS) to give you real time telemetry for lining up intelligent flight modes such as active track and quick shots whereby the drone needs to be a minimum altitude above the ground. The normal vertical altitude reading is assessed against the homepoint from where the drone took off. The VPS reading will display n/a when outside the detectable range of the downward sensors - usually 10M+ AGL.

Cool  Surprised it's not that clear in the manual

To be honest I am not sure whether this is explained in the MA manual or might be a serious overlook on my behalf. Definitely shall check this, but rather tomorrow. Last night was a bit tiring ;-)

Pawel_g is correct.
It's the distance from AC to RC (provided RC has a valid GPS signal)

I might missing something here:
My screenshot here shows the lateral distance from RC to AC:

Think you are - when it switches from VPS then it shows the distance to the device if the device has a module.

It even shows VPS in the manual - it auto switches to AC/RC when out of VPS range or shows n/a if using a WiFi only device with no module.

I'm aware on how that works.
OP asked firsthand what the icon with N/A means, then secondly why his fathers icon sometimes displays 5000, and then about VPS.

You, of course provided only the correct answer about VPS in post #3, nothing more.

The OP asked what that icon is and why it also shows VPS - I have explained that based on factual information - whether you wish to accept that or not is your problem sunshine!
And your failure to acknowledge that my answer in post number 3 was also correct implies that you thought it was incorrect and given your own admission that you thought you had 'missed something' in post number 16 does show that perhaps you didn't know how it worked in the first place...

This is the horizontal distance between the drone and pilot. It relates to the mobile device's GPS accuracy.
When it is close to the ground and conditions available, it will display the distance of the ultrasonic. distance.png
