Help. I linked a new dji spark to my remote. Was trying it out and on takeoff it went 4 feet up but instead of hovering it started moving backwards. Without my control. Cannot tell how to fix this. Happened repeatedly

Willey, just to verify, is there any message popped up on the app? Please help to check the following info:
1. Please check if the propellers are damaged, change them when necessary;
2. Fly in P mode with good GPS environment, avoid flying when there is a strong wind and much interference around;
3. Calibrate the IMU and compass, if possible, also calibrate the VPS system;

Yes happens on multiple batteries

And yes. I was trying it over a flat sidewalk. Just got this one before a trip and trying to make sure it worked

Make sure the protective plastic is removed from all the sensors, front and bottom and that they are clean. If it thinks it's too close to something it may be trying to back away from it. Good luck and Happy Landings!

if you were flying near a pavement, the problem lies in the nearby lamp posts or electrical posts. Avoid pavements and raise the SPARK to a height of minimum 13 to 15 meters while hoovering.  Do not fly indoors.
There is nothing wrong with SPARK as long as the props are ok.
