History

We have owned every DJI Drone that ever came out with no issues...but we have yet to fly our DJI Mavic Air. Even though we bought it the day it came out. We are also an app development and a highly innovative company... so we deal with technical questions everyday so we ARE VERY THOROUGH IN OUR TROUBLESHOOTING and experienced as bug hunters...eliminating "user error" out of the problem...

So here it is (Please point me right to the fix if this has been discussed a dozen times!)

Started with update issues and some frustrating phone calls the week of release with no explanation and a few send it backs but we just put it on the shelf hoping an update would release to fix the issue. Got as far as getting it off the ground but as soon at you fire up the props it goes blac.... from green to red indicator (No Image Transmission Signal) (Disconnected) (No Signal)... if you wait a few... eventually it will flicker back on but literally as soon as you touch a stick or move it drops again... mostly stays disconnected until you land it and then BAM...shes back solid green....repeat...

This is literally from 10 feet away... we have tried open fields, desert, urban, near wifi, away from wifi, rebooting, changing 2.4 through 5.8.... changing Apple cables... changing between 4 diferent iPhones... 3 different iPads... more calls to DJI with little help but "Send it back".

Again we were in transition from Phoenix AZ back to Chesapeake VA... so we did not want to deal with the shipping delay in transition so we waited...figuring an update or some sort of aknowledgement of the problem were experiencing....Nothing I can find so far...

NOW

Pulled it out today months later and same same...

After several attempt on the iPhone X tonight here is what we got.

Updated the DJI4 app to v4.2.12

Did an initial update on the controller which went well v01.00.0100

Then got an "Firmwares out of sync" I beleive was the wording so started the Drone update...it downloaded...then failed dozens of times to Upgrade not getting past 0%.

Rebooted Everything several times. Disconnected from Wifi and moved further away from house....no luck.

At one point we just tried skipping the update and going into the drone and got some scary warnings (see photo)

We then tried performing the update again on an iPad PRO 10.5.

Along the way we did the controller resync a few times to the drone using its new "Hidden" button... 1 beep... then did the button combo on controller to resync.

Eventually after letting the iPad "Upgrade" for almost 10 minutes it did not fail... but very slowly went to 1%...then 2% (5 minutes later)...3% (10 minutes after that)... you get the picture... Battery would have been dead by then and YES we started each attempt with a full Drone, controller and iPad battery!

After another reboot...resync of controller... a few "firmware out of sync warnings" ... we got it to update complete.

Then ... same as before when the Mavic Air first came out of the box...

Not going to repeat the above identical flight.. but it has a signal... you fire up the props and it drops... you take off a few feet off ground it may flicker back on on hover...but as soon as you put in a stick movement it drops... (10 feet away no more than 20 feet off ground)

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON?!

I'm guessing the answer is "send it back"....but again as developers we would like an explination... or did we just get a "lemon" out of the gate?

We love all our DJI's especially the Mavic Pro.... how did this new Mavic Air happen... and if the answer is "interference"...I'm gonna have a hard time understanding why you changed up the connection method from all the other models as we never had this issue!!

Also to clarify... after all that updating and reboots... eventually all those scary error warnings went away... problem still exists..

Also in Wifi mode with just the iPhone X as the remote this does not happen and the signal is fine.... so this is a problem with the RC/Drone connection...

Not sure if this helps figure out this issue further...

After getting the Drone to update again on DJI assistant fine I try and update the RC as well. It downloads and fails to upload saying current firmware is now V00.00.0000? with the V01.00.0100 and V01.00.000 both an option for upgrade... but they both fail out repeatedly.

Also having issues resyncing through the DJI4 app to the drone (it times out after a minute of trying) following the procedures...

Is this a faulty RC?

After this I go back to the DJI4 app and it says RC requires update to V01.00.0100. Performing the update on the DJI4 app runs quick with a successful update. However when then hooking it to DJI Assistant it says the remote is still on V00.00.0000 and needs an upgrade...?

Sounds like a circuit board short cct when you draw power to motors the Comms module fails either a dry joint or a nicked track it would also account for interface issues
