For all of those wondering or those who have had problems reaching the advertised flying distance, I flew my P3 at the beach with nothing between me and my Phantom 3 and was able to get it over a mile with more room to go but I brought it back. Before flying at the beach I flew it in my neighborhood with houses and trees and the farthest I could get it was 3000 feet. With this I have concluded the distance has all to do about where you are flying so anyone having problems with distance I would recommend going somewhere wide open as possible.

I experienced EXACTLY the same with my P2 Vision - flying at a beach with no residences/businesses around showed next to no vision dropouts, compared to a built up residential area where I had lots of dropouts.  

The worst experience was at the top of a mountain right next to a heap of radio and cell transmitters - nearly lost the drone into trees that day!  And was only about 100ft away.
