Managed to get over to a spot I've been wanting to check out for a while, this railroad classification yard near downtown.  It was cool to see how everything worked, with the cars gravity feeding down to the various tracks.

What a huge place. And an interesting concept.  I wonder what the gradient is?  I believe that for liquid drainage in pipes 2 degrees is sufficient to maintain flow.  Maybe this is a similar principle?   Thanks for the share.

Thanks, I'm sure its something like that, where some bright engineer has figured out what grade is required to get the cars down there without smashing them together too hard.

Very cool video, nice transitions to the music! I too was wondering what mechanism are they using to send the cars down the tracks and not smash into the other cars. The person doing that is probably a pinewood derby champ! Thanks for sharing!

There is a control shack thing that is releasing the cars at constant intervals, probably along with electronic controls of the switches.

That was fun to watch.  I wondered if they just the cars smash into one another to stop, or if they had some kind of brakes?

According to the wikipedia page, some have electronic brake controllers to control speed, and others just let them roll.  I'm not sure what this one uses, but there are warning signs as you enter the yard that cars are controlled remotely and might move unexpectedly when no one is around.
