Hi im thinking of flying my drone down a 30 year old abandoned railway track. Is it illegal to do that even if i take off and land in a field next to the track

I walk along an old railway line in the midlands regularly and fly my Air in active track mode while I do sometimes. If people or animals are about I stop flying. The regulations specify 150m away from a congested area and 50m away from buildings or people etc that are not under your control. In reality its about flying sensibly. Just using a little bit of common sense will get you a long way. The average person doesn't know the regulations on where you can or cannot fly your drone and in my experience tend to either not bother talking or just ask loads of questions. Usually, how much, how high, how far. As long as you aren't being a nuisance then you will be fine.
