I have just bought and fitted a camera and gimbal cover for my Spark. It is a very snug fit and I cannot get it off without prising it which I am reluctant to do. I don't want to power up in case it affects the gimbal operation. Are these covers meant to be removed before flight or do they stay on once attached?

It doesn't give a make, got it off Amazon and it is made in China.

You have to remove it or you will get gimbal errors.  On power up Spark will check gimbal movement and if it can't move because the cover is on you could damage the gimbal.  Always remove the cover before powering up your Spark.
Is this the cover you purchased?  Whether it is or it's not, cover must be removed before powering up your Spark.

Yes, you should definitely remove that cover before powering on your Spark since it restricts the gimbal from moving.

Hi, I am sorry that you are having this issue with the Gimbal Cover that you have bought in Amazon. Upon checking the website that was provided I recommend that you should remove the Gimbal Cover that is placed on the DJI Spark before you switch the Drone on so that the DJI Spark's Gimbal can move freely and not to damage it.

I have the same cover for my Spark.  Put it on once, never again.  I had the same issues, it was hard to get off and I was afraid I would damage the Gimbal.  I managed to get it off, but i wasn't taking the chance again.

Definitely remove before powering up the Spark,, interesting note on the Amazon site it says is a breeze to fit and remove.!!!

I've been thinking of a hood to keep the sun from shining on the lense. Of course, it wouldn't help if you have to take it off before flying.
