To be fair, the article says "as little as £30" and "between £30 and £3000."  But it's still a huge problem - not just the press but the actual idiots who do the things the press reports on.  The REAL a problem is that we are an increasingly lawless society in which significant numbers of people say "the law says  WHAT?  That's stupid.  I'll do what I want."

These dishonest people could do the same thing with a ladder in the middle of the night.  If the media figures this out, they'll try to take away our ladders, too..

Maybe they should take away the cars used in the getaway? or the knives we eat with that people get stabbed with, or maybe prescription drugs that drug addicts steal and even kill for to get their fix, or take away the guns that people use to shoot each other. With the way the media is and the uneducated are they will never learn the problem is nothing more than people themselves.

Typically the saying is "one bad apple ruins the whole basket" but in this case there is a whole crap load of bad apples in the orchard.  (Sign)

The difference between UAS, knives, cars and ladders is simple.  Almost everyone uses a car, ladder or knife from time to time.  Threatening to take those things away would negatively impact the overwhelming majority of people - so politicians won't do it.  UAS are used by a minority of people.  Even if every UAS owner or operator in the USA voted for or against any particular president, it would not meaningfully affect the outcome.  So politicians can be seen by their constituency as "DOING something" by legislating against UAS in response to all this panic-inducing news coverage, and it won't hurt them politically (and may benefit them by making it look as though they're responsive to problems).
