One of my first drone videos whilst working in Queenstown, NZ.  So thought I'd share with the DJI Community!

Nice footage but you could have been arrested and fined heavily flying around Queenstown and in particular that high over Kelvin Heights over the Frankton Arm and up the Crown Range. You realise that these areas are close to or directly IN the flight path of commercial aircraft.

New Zealand is a beautiful country but one that is increasingly drone unfriendly. If you must enjoy flying, please keep such footage to yourself and friends. You WILL compromise the enjoyment of others who have safety in mind.

The New Zealand authorities have no interest in making their country more accessible to flyers unless they are serious film-makers willing to go through a lengthy permissions process. Also, there are a whole pile of helicopter / fixed wing aircraft operators who want the whole airspace kept in the status quo.

Hey there thanks for comments! Glad you liked the footage, Its gorgeous part of the world I love going to.

In response to your message however,  I never flew inside a no flight zone, I was always outside the 5km radius. I made sure I didn't go near it and stayed clear of it. I also called the companies who fly helicopters in the area, (I have an app that informs the user of any no flight zones, or controlled airspaces)  I informed them I would be flying for approximately 5 minutes and the path/s I wanted to take, and did so when no helicopters were being flown. So this made sure everyone knew about this.

I agree 100 percent, its a serious thing and alot people don't take flying a drone serious. I always make sure I take as much precautions as possible. If I was inside the no flight zone, I wouldn't have flown, and if I was told a strict no at all times from the helicopter companies then I wouldn't have flown in that area either. Safety is better than a great shot.

I take safety and flying drones very seriously, my colleague is CASA (Civil Aviation Authority Australia) Certified pilot to fly the inspire 2. I was Cinematographer on a Travel Television series were we traveled to over 10 countries. Seeing the process and workflow he took has taught me alot, so I will never jeopardise safety or fly in areas that can harm people or get myself into trouble. Its simply not worth it, nor the financial loss from a fine I would get.

OK. Good to hear. If you ever step into a DOC office, you'll know why I'm writing what I'm writing. Most Kiwi's don't have the money to buy drones and they hate them flying around. Things have changed a lot since 2014/15. Just be careful. I can PM you some of my experiences and also some info about NFZ's in that locale you may not be familiar with.

Yes I spoke with a few farmers in rural NZ about this, apparently sometimes drones are being used for the not so good, spying on other farmers, and the expensive equipment etc. So in rural NZ definitely they are not the most favourable piece of gear!  Would be keen to hear some of your experiences.

Its called + Drone

Great app, making an account takes a minute then its at your disposal. From menu's you will see no flight zones, once youre in there the map updates with all the  zones. From controlled airspace, restricted air space, and no fly zones. It also has the flight paths that are outside no flight zones but might be restricted. Reallly good app. Has numbers of either airport, helipad, companies, whatever you need in relation to that zone.

Idiots flying at 300m! At this rate, the drone bans will intensify and they will basically not allow drones into the country.

Its a beautiful place but all it takes is one or two idiots and everyone else could be affected.
