The GPS altitude in your photo appears to be correct. It's the altitude above sea level, not above the ground. Google earth shows that location (on the ground) as being over 900 meters in elevation.

To see the altitude above the ground, look for the Relative Altitude EXIF tag.

No. I was flying exacly on that altitude marked in the control 365,5 meters. But on mavic its not accurate!

it's my understand that EXIF GPSAltitude tag contains the GPS Altitude above (or below if the reference is 1) mean sea level. Information about the standard can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif

DJI populates the Relative Altitude tag with the barometric height above the ground. You can use exif tools to read all the tags.

If DJI recorded the relative altitude in the GPS Altitude tag, that would be non-standard.

What follows are all the tags. It appears that the image was processed using photoshop, and it added a number of tags as well.

The altitude tags are:

Absolute Altitude               : +1.20
Relative Altitude               : +908.44
GPS Altitude                    : 908.4 m Above Sea Level

the absolute and relative values appear to be bugs from a previous version of firmware...if my memory is correct these appear to be bugs from the initial firmware release.  Current firmware will have a relative altitude value equal to the barometric-calculated hight above the ground. The GPS Altitude is likely correct.

The gps altitude is correct. The relative altitude bug is fixed, I’m pretty sure, in the current firmware.

I'm having the same issue, GPS Altitude in my pictures Exif data is useless. I have a Mavic 2 Enterprise which all up to date in terms of firmware and software (as of 1/26/19).I'm suprised to see this is a such long stading issue as this data is important with regards to mapping operation.

Im sending a foto on this email, this foto was made with dji mavic 2 pro and dji 4 go and dji last firmware.


If you check the EXIF info on the foto :

GPSLatitudeRef        North

GPSAltitudeRef        Below Sea Level
GPSAltitude        0 m


If you check the XMP info on the foto :


Latitude        +40.6336207

The Absolute Altitude is -73.49 ! So your saying to use this value ?? This says that the drone is under the sea altitude 73 meters !!

After this email if you say to use the Relative Altitude, the mapping software ( Pix4d, DroneDeploy, PhotoScan, Bentley Concept ) dont get this value, the always go to the GPS ALTITUDE !

So you must understand that is impossible for us to edit 800 or 900 fotos and tell each foto the altitude on the GPS Altitude manually !


We need this GPS altitude repair as soon as possible.

DJI Has a problem in the DJI MAVIC 2 Drones, the drone "thinks" that is under the sea altitude and turns the values to negative so GPS altitude goes ZERO !

The Info on the foto on the EXIF :

Says the GPS ALTITUDE Ref is below sea level !!! This is the problem on the dji drones mavic 2 ! Repair this !

Just had to re-fly a job using MP, because of this issue. PIX4d just can't handle the bad data even when using GCP's. Hope this will be resolved soon.

Thanks Paulo, your solution only copies RelativeAltitude as GPSAltitude. It is not necessary to create a 3D model. I need to generate a .LAS file on the basis of the 3D model, and there is a real GPS altitude required.

Here we are again,
also in Italy despite the last firmware the same problem regarding GPS altitude still persists.

Still no update on this really sserious issue? Does anybody at DJI take the needs of their customers seriously? Feels more like the goal is to make everybody forget by telling them the fix is in the works.

DJI company, what is the progress with our problem? Can you admit that this can not be done with Mavic 2 PRO. We are all waiting for a solution here. I will have to make a sales decision. I am asking for a contact from you - the whole thing has been going on for too long.

Can you confirm if the DJI drones have fixed the Geo-locating and Geo-tagging problems as per your last post?
I am looking to move into the drone market with my company but this is vital to our operation. The DJI Mavic 2 pro, enterprise and phantom have been on our business scope. If this problem has not been fully resolved in this time I will have to take them out as options as a business.

Also any other recommendations the community have regarding drones useful for aerial imaging within the Civil Engineering market would be highly appreciated.

Also the absolute altitude seems wrong as well. Here I was flying about 97 meters above the ground, probably 270 meters MSL. The Relative seems right, but not the Absolute.

Do you want to explain your issue?
Why would you say that you can't do photogrammetry with a Mavic 2 when so many other users do exactly that?
