Can’t say I agree with kazcow or personally choose to be led by the genuine but percentile-wise uncommon experiences of a few unfortunate individuals. No company is perfect or able to produce products that boast a 100% success rate, but Apple hardware is generally very reliable and builds excellent quality equipment.
Due to my requirements as a designer I purchased my first Mac in the late 90’s (admittedly to late to attend the launch party but still many years before they became geek-chic or cool-sheep lifestyle statements) and having owned a Macintosh Classic II, Power Mac G4, iMac, Intel Power Mac G5, Mac Mini, mid 2009 MacBook Pro, 2012 MacBook Pro Retina, and now a 2018 MacBook Pro, I’ve only ever experienced a small handful of issues.
My G5 motherboard died and Apple gave me a brand new computer with improved specs as a direct replacement. That G5 unfortunately developed a fault out of warranty and I had to pay £350 to repair it. Then the screen on my MacBook Pro retina suffered the staingate issue (matte coating peeling off) which Apple fixed for free outside of the warranty. That’s it. During 20 years of extensive all-day-every-day usage, they are the only issues I encountered and Apple fixed most of them without issue. I don’t love Apple, but it’s only fair to say that’s pretty good going.
Agree with you HedgeTrimmer that Tim Cook wasn’t the best replacement for Steve Jobs as, whilst the company has done very well financially, the business has lost a noticeable chunk of what made it so special and a success in the first place. But that’s evolution for you I guess. I don’t think the MacBook Pro is a complete failure by any stretch though. It’s not what I wanted out of a retina MacBook Pro replacement and doesn’t follow the route Jobs would have liked, but it’s still an immensely capable and impressive ultra book that - in top spec guise at least - overshadows the majority of the competitors ultra books. The bench mark tests of my 2.9GHz, 32GB, Vega 20 built Mac are extremely impressive. |
