I just received my Mavic Pro Platinum and apparently now should purchase an Ipad Mini 4 to fly it with.  I would prefer a tabliet but is it correct that Follow me and other functions are not available when using a tablet?

DJI Natalia is correct. As long as the iPad has GPS(cell) you have those features.
I have the iPad mini 4 ,Wi-fi only and never needed to use those functions that required GPS. If you need GPS for Follow me, you can just jump on to your cell phones Wi-fi or someone else's who are with you.
