Seeing that I KNOW virtually NOTHING about video please suggest a Free Video Player/Editor.

You can find a list of commonly used video editors here. You'll likely find how-to videos on YouTube if you need help with the editor you decide to use.

I use VLC player (free of cost and can handle 4k) fast, reliant and free.

In the editing area I just switched from Adobe Premiere pro (Which is really good I would say, expensive on the downside) to Hitfilm Express which is free.
You can do the "same" thing I would say, Hitfilm have a steeper learning curve and is NOT as "obvious" as A P P.  But no costs is a great driver.
Hitfilm is slower in the "editing" process then A P P in my judgment. Especially when you work with 4K. That is valid for everything except rendering the video i.e when you want to create the final video.

There is a lot of tutorials if you Google Hitfilm express.
