This is the furthest I've ever been able to push my Mavic (Would always lose signal and it would start returning home) Guess the range on the "Wifi" isn't so bad, it's just the interference it gets from a densly populated area. How far have you guys been able to push your mavics?

Awesome. Mine gave me around 1.3 km in Namibia, but only around 800meters in and around Pretoria, South Africa.

Does that mean you lose signal and it starts returning to home automatically?

Wow 3km on a Spark?? Gotta say that is really impressive since the spark is marketed as going only 2km. I wonder how far the Air can really go if the battery lasted longer

Yep, here is the vid

I bet that I can take the mavic air 5 km one way, there’s a guy I know that took his mavic air 4 km one way.
It all depends on the interference where you are flying and the wind.
I always try to do the range tests with minimal wind.

Fly safely.

Hi,

Nice video and great range!

If i may make one remark: you did not align your mobile device compass with your drone!
Red arrow should move forward toward the white marking. Is that important, well not when you know where you drone is flying.....
If you loose sight, than aligning center - red arrow - white marking >> you know where to look in the sky and point your antennas to it (better signal)

cheers

Only you did not align your mobile device compass with your drone!

I noticed that while I was editing... Question: What is the number % on the compass that says "Power" what does that number mean?

number shows how much power you are using. Usefull, well imo not.
Only usefull if you know that with certain power level the fly range will go to a maximum!

Yeah. Bummer. Send it in for repair, still to test it properly after receiving it back. Did 500meters without problems so far, in a populated area, so signal weaker.
Would love to go 3 kms.

You are in South Africa so I guess you are in CE mode, which on mavic air is limited to 2km on 2.4 ghz range and only to 500 meters on the 5.8 ghz range.
If you want to go past that, then you will have to change to FCC mode.
Frogyprod is in Canada, so he is in FCC mode and can go to the max drones abilities.

That’s cool! But you could have went much further, you still had 71% battery left.
The issue was the connection
Try in a different place and you will get at least 4 km, I think the mavic air can do 5 km no problem.
I do 3 km on a spark when it’s advertised as 2 km.
Dustin did a range test of almost 10 km on mavic 2 when it’s advertised as 8 km!

definitely have pushed it further, but i find it impressive that i managed to get it that far on wifi over a very congested area (lot of cell towers and a lot of wifi).  however the battery which was included with my mavic air was defective... not entirely bad on arrival but, bad enough that as you can see at 71% power i'm about to get that low power return to home prompt with 10 second countdown.  and there was no wind in either direction, very calm night.  my new battery i purchased did the same run in and at roughly the same spot i had 84% battery remaining and the yellow H point on the bar is way bar to the left..

now sadly that battery was included with my mavic air has completely failed, it failed separate from this run..  it died while hovering, got "critically low battery" at 80% and the drone dropped out of the air 5 feet up.. now im dealing with the nightmare known as dji customer service..

Nice distance. The furthest I've had mine out is 1.5 miles. Should do a test over land so you can just emergency land it anywhere if you run out of battery.

Damn that's really impressive.. You went 3.2km with 71% battery left.. in a congested area?!?! Is it cause of the 5.8G ? I thought that one doesn't take you as far

5.8Ghz is better in highly congested areas..  in FCC mode 5.8Ghz has a higher dBm (effective power) as well and thus has more potential to go further..

the theory behind 2.4Ghz vs 5.8Ghz is higher frequencies get absorbed in the air more and cant go through or around things as much, but the higher dBm of 5.8Ghz more than makes up for those small losses..

and that battery is defective it doesn't know how much power is actually left..says 71% and about to trigger RTH on low battery and also says i have over 8 minutes of power leftr... makes no sense at all. it landed back to my feet with signal digit % remaining after that test..   i did the same exact run with me new battery i purchased myself and at that roughly same 3.2km it was at 84% and the homepoint on the status bar was much further to the left and i managed roughly same distance before got no signal..it returned to me with around 30% power remaining..

True, but would love to get at least 1.5 km,s average, not just the 5 to 600 m presently. (That is in FCC )
That being said, I have yet to test the repaired drone out properly, so maybe, holding thumbs.........it will be a improvement.

I have a huge open field/farm behind my house.

I flew it a couple of times from my porch over the weekend and got 1800m with no real connectivity problems.

1km is good enough for me anyway. A circle radius of 1km is a big piece of land

Hi Christine,

When your mobile device is compass-wise calibrated the compass in the GoApp will work OK
So has nothing to do with your drone compass; if both compasses are calibrated (drone+device) than you see that the red arrow is pointing fwd. If you stand in a straighline behind your drone you see a picture like this:

a video : https://forum.dji.com/thread-144696-1-1.html

It always makes me wondering why this is so important to many, since the maximum range of any UAV is widely unpredictable and not repeatable? What is the outcome of such mission? Moreover, long range flights beyond VLOS are always jeopardizing, at least in terms of public safety issues. But that's me ...

its the same when people ask what is the point of occusync system on the mavic pro/2 if your not allowed to fly miles away... its not all about how far it can and will go but how solid that signal is when its in a less than ideal environment, the fact that it goes basically forever is a consequence of that quality... and people want to see what the limits are

but also for some of us, its a bit of a thrill pushing your drone to the "extreme" then managing to get it back..
