I would say it’s fairly imminent, if you’ve been around here for a while you might have seen similar, dji put up release notes take them down, and fairly soon after FW arrives.

You know, I've owned multiple DJI products and have been pleased with all of them for the most part.  The tech is amazing.  I'm still kinda mad I sold my Spark.  And the MA is a really cool platform, but I feel for the folks that have chosen to  ground theirs waiting for FW updates that were promised but never delivered.  DJI's handling of this platform has been almost criminal.  It will not be lost on me.

I’m wondering if the recent news about stricter drone laws in the US is the holdup.  They might be doing something to tinker with the firmware last-minute to make it harder for people to just stay on .400 forever instead of upgrading, like plugging a vulnerability to jailbreaking the firmware.

If DJI is going to start enforcing a 400 foot hard cap on altitude or crippling the WiFi to keep the drone within 500 meters (or something like that) I know I’ll be trying to hold out as long as possible, because at that point I’d just be done with the hobby. I’m not going to call the freaking FAA every time I need to fly over a hill that’s a few hundred feet tall or take a 20-foot high group selfie while 4 miles away from an airport.

Maybe I just was the first to update but here's proof I am on .500.

I think they will support Mavic Air for a good while yet, they’re still supporting some p3 and P4, which are over 3 years old, Mavic Air has had more updates than Spark in its first 7 months.
So hopefully update soon.

I don't think that's the case, DJI has a world market not just USA. As example from end of July this year it is now illegal in UK to fly more than 400 ft AGL and yet there are no specific restrictions other than those that have always existed (e.g. 500m (1640 ft) limit AGL). And the only limitation on range is the radio system in use.

I'm still holding off on update, .400 is working well.

is it just me or does mavic air have an issue with massive frame drops around trees and buildings more than it should?   moment you got around full big trees or behind buildings instead of the picture quality dropping to crap the frame locks up for 1-3 seconds solid lock up... both the sparks i used to own when signal suddenly took a nose dove the image quality did too (same with my mavic pro) it may dropped a few frames but the image quality drops and remained relatively smooth so uu could prevent crashing into something....  i much rather image quality turn to hell vs these dangerously massive frame pauses that sometimes happens that's a crash waiting to happen!

maybe dji should give us options in the signal menus for this or something?   
like "Dyanmic Quality" and "HD Quality"     

Dyanmic starts at HD then drops to absolutehell if it has to to keep the frame rate going and higher so you can see where your going... (potentially longer range as well?)

HD Quality operates like it does now..  more prone to occassional skips and pauses, but trying to keep quality in live feed as solid as possible..

Been getting a lot of errors popping up on the screen, from Gimbal overload to huge interference being detected.

To clarify - You were able to download and install 2018/09/30 .0500 FW on to your Mavic Air?

I was able to update both controller and MA yesterday.
I've yet to test it.

I'm getting disconnection errors when behind a building or near trees.
I also get transmission loss when the MA is still within sight and is straight ahead.

Any ideas on this?

I was able to update both controller and MA yesterday.

I'm also getting disconnection errors I never saw before, even far away from trees and other obstructions. It's happened twice in two test flights so far. The drone eventually reconnected, but not before a minute or so of anxiety on my part.

If by "transmission loss" you mean video lag and break-up, I'm also seeing more of that than I did before the update.

Thanks for your input.
I hooked up a parabolic range booster earlier to my controller.
I noticed that if I aim the controller at the drone and just head in a straight direction, I reached up to about 1000m.
It could have gone a bit further but I was scared cause the drone was like a small dot in the sky.

I guess it really depends on the environment right?
I've seen videos where they can go beyond what I've done so far without any hassle.

Transmission loss, meaning disconnection? I guess. I'm not sure of the proper terms.
Like, when I'm flying the drone around 200 meters away, even without trees in sight, it would give me the "Image Transmission loss" or something in the lines of that.

Same here, my friend.
Everytime the RC looses video transmission, I start to worry.

Well spotted. I'm in Aust and will check when I'm home tonight.

But I'm really impressed with the Release Notes. In the past, DJI have rarely admitted to errors and kept quiet on what fixes were included, only listing the enhancements. But the last few releases I've seen (including this one for the MA) provide All the details. Well done DJI.

In my case... (I did not expect a firmware update) I went flying today... The first thing I noticed was a warning (before entering the FLY-screen) that there was an Firmware Update for the Remote Controller... but I skipped that info... then I noticed a requester stating that there was an update for the Fly Safe Databases... but I also skipped that (the weather was getting worse and I wanted to fly)…
After I came home I connected everything and downloaded AND installed the firmware update for the remote controller... after restarting everything, linking the Mavic Air and my iPad connected, I did not notice a firmware update for the Mavic Air itself...
Then I went into the "ABOUT" section in the "GENERAL SETTINGS" where you can tap on "CHECK FOR UPDATE" and then I got the message there was a firmware update for the Mavic Air. I installed that (took some patience and time) the Mavic Air restarted twice and then there was this "Fly Safe" update requester as well. After a little while everything was ok.
The day after tomorrow I can make a testflight…

I am too... but I did not have the opportunity to fly yet as it's dark...
I described how I got to the firmware update for the Aircraft, as this did not show up automatically in my case...

Yes I was able to download and install it using the DJI GO 4 APP.... (iOS)

Do I need to update all batteries or is this firmware 0.500 inside the drone?

This time it's only for the aircraft and the RC, but you might have one or two Fly Safe Database updates too.

No it is not for the battery. Just restart and see if you get a second one. The fly safe database update is just a coincident I believe and depending on when you last updated there might be just one for you. I had two, but I also hadn't used the MA for a while because too busy with the new M2P.

I would agree with Wachtberger that these are coincidental with the firmware release.
The flysafe database is the data used for geofencing and protecting NFZ's (No Fly Zones, usually a fixed radius around airports, prisons, nuclear plant, sports stadiums etc). They can be seen in 'About' (and checked for updates) in the 'General Settings' menu.
Often there are two updates one for the DJI Go 4 App, the other for the aircraft which may be flying autonomously when returning to home, and needs to know where the geofences are. Each display device running DJI Go 4 and each aircraft you own will need updating.

From time to time they will change if regulations change, or as new and old zones are added and removed.
