Jeez, I will try put my TAB S in front of air conditioning and show you how cold he is and then I will do the test again WITH or WITHOUT gps  signal...

I don´t understand...........

APP 1.1.0 and Firmware 1.1.8 all works perfect.

APP 1.1.0 and Firmware 1.1.9, a lot of problems.

And DJI is working only in the APP ????

DJI, let us downgrade to 1.1.8 and meanwhile sees fixing the problem peacefully.

If DJI takes two weeks to fix the problem, we take can not fly more than a month ....

At least we can fly while DJI fixes.

Well, I just made some tests and something weird is going on....
I tested my TAB S in front of my 16ºC air conditioning and I got this results:

21ºC of cores

With 57% use of cores

AND NOW... MY FRIENDS.... When GPS signal is aquired (Safe to fly), Here what I got:

73ºc of cores!!! Jeesus mother of god! (still in front of 16ºC air coinditioning)

And 85% of use of cores

Well.. now I get why the f*** the video is laggy... no processor can work in good conditionings with such temperature... If is it with 73ºC/164ºF, I imagine what happens in hot out there...

But DJI, you CAN'T BLAME my device... only Pilot App or Firmware or whatever is making my processor/core so hot!!

Tiago, install the app COOL TOOL and you can see the MHz, % CPU , etc, used at all times in real time.

Open DJI PILOT APP and see IT.

To me, Without Satellites the app use aprox 70%

With 2 or 4 satellites use 80%

And with full satellites 8 or more (16, 18, 20......) the app use 90 - 98 % of CPU resources.........

And for me, the DJI PILOT APP only uses 1300 mhz, (my tablet have maximum 1900mhz).

A friend with 1.1.8 and DJI pilot 1.1.0 test with cool tool and the results are the same, but no lag. The tablet uses 90 - 95% CPU resources, but no lag or freezes.

But with 1.1.9, in the same conditions, the lag appears.

It makes perfect sense that GPS adds 20-25% load to whatever it was previously.

Surely we've all noticed that when GPS stuff (google maps, etc.) is running on our devices, they suck battery life down much quicker??

I wonder if Android allows an app to kill other (non-critical) apps automatically (if you give permission)...this would be ideal for most pilots.

battery consumption when using GPS on tablets / smartphones is not due to CPU usage but to power consumption by GPS module ... so really no connection here and your compare makes no sense.
to go deeper here ... if you want to save battery on your device you switch off GPS module so apps cannot use it, you are not disabling CPU part responsible for GPS.
all GPS magic should be done on drone not on tablet ... this will make no sense to calculate in drone and on tablet for 2nd time - flight statistics (including GPS) are shared directly from drone (through DJI API) so you can see what is going on and where the flying machine is, in short you can rely on data and see real status.

Also GPS algorithms are easy to handle if well written ;)

they should be able to fix ;)

I gotta agree, that i found it weird there was 0 lag before i acquire lock and take off, and the more satellite i add the more the lag was strong...I disabled precise location, and use Device only mode now, maybe it helped...Maybe the lag is caused by the Tablet Scanning wifi even if wifi is off to find more precise location using wifi...(maybe it spam that every 3 sec)

How about you guys try to disable the wifi+gps location option and make it Device only (Gps only non-wifi)
And come back here with results...?

Read the whole thing, also planning on buying a P3A. Thought I'd lend a hand here using my internal logical co-processor ;)
1) Heat is not the REASON here but the RESULT
2) GPS off - good, GPS on - bad
3) GPS is calculated on board of the machine, the only GPS-related data the app gets is the number of satellites.
4) So if drone is in GPS mode, does it still fly stable when app starts to freeze? If so - drone / firmware is out of the question.

Get an old computer, like a .. Sempron, and graphics from lets say .. 2006, try playing YouTube  videos on it .. Behaves familiar, doesn't it?
My money is on the stream itself, or to be more precise, the way this is decoded and optimised.

Also I'd stop nagging DJI for the time being, this is not helping them in any way, their primary goal is to deliver a fix.
Once this has been released and found running without issues, only then - follow the complaint route and concentrate on improving their service.

jerry486 - Read the whole thing, also planning on buying a P3A. Thought I'd lend a hand here using my internal logical co-processor ;)
1) Heat is not the REASON here but the RESULT

Not sure...I think the heat issue was there with FW 1.1.8.

2) GPS off - good, GPS on - bad
I have not tested this issue.

3) GPS is calculated on board of the machine, the only GPS-related data the app gets is the number of satellites.
I agree...there is no reason for the app to process GPS data when the P3 has already performed the positioning calculations.

4) So if drone is in GPS mode, does it still fly stable when app starts to freeze? If so - drone / firmware is out of the question.
Maybe, but the P3 firmware may prioritize GPS data processing over video streaming and other tasks. So, the more satellites the P3 has acquired, the more GPS data it has to process. Therefore, less time for other lower priority tasks?

I am not convinced it is the app yet.  But I am gladly waiting a fix of the app, F/W or both.

I'm with you on the stop nagging but....

Does the app constantly use GPS data to plot the maps, give the altitude and speed (in combo with the other sensors), plot home point, distance, radar, etc.?

It would seem the craft gets the GPS data (of course), but that all overlays and most calcs are made in the Device (App).

If the P3 was sending all acquired satellite GPS data to the app for processing, that would be very inefficient programming.

I would think that the P3 CPU makes the positioning calc and only sends basic data to the app such as current Date, UTC, Lat., Lon., Alt., Att.,  speed, number of satellites, etc....The flight log data appears to be updated every 150mS, how much of this data is used by the app seem to be minimal. The app is not displaying every data column in the flight log, it uses some and stores it all.

The app could update its map overlays with this basic data.

4) So if drone is in GPS mode, does it still fly stable when app starts to freeze? If so - drone / firmware is out of the question.
"Maybe, but the P3 firmware may prioritize GPS data processing over video streaming and other tasks. So, the more satellites the P3 has acquired, the more GPS data it has to process. Therefore, less time for other lower priority tasks?"

- But then, the app itself crashes, nothing to do with the drone's calculations / task management.
- Also notice the way the app freezes, also if the drone did the prioritizing why would our phones overheat, not the drone?

--

"Does the app constantly use GPS data to plot the maps, give the altitude and speed (in combo with the other sensors), plot home point, distance, radar, etc.?"

- No, it does not USE any GPS data, it simply acts as a dashboard, receiving a simplified stream of numbers. All data is used onboard by the drone itself (stasbilization, etc), if the app was to use and repond to the same data stream as the drone was - God help us all Simply put - the drone will fly without the app, the app is useless without the drone..

--

"If the P3 was sending all acquired satellite GPS data to the app for processing, that would be very inefficient programming."

It would be suicide and would only work if certain conditions were met (quick processor, newer smartphones would have the advantage). but imagine the lag and delay in relaying commands... This would never work.

As for the complexity of what the drone is .. "thinking".. Imagine constantly having to monitor 20 different satelite streams and per each processing cycle do stuff like: where am I? How high am I? Am I off course? By how many feet? Which way do I need to head to correct? Oh, what's my battery status, am I ok to maintain my current course before I run out of juice?

Imagine 20 pins piercing through an apple (3d sphere) going through your drone inside of it (GPS signal), now rotate the apple. If that does not blow your mind, well ..

BTW, can you disable the video feed and receive telemetry only?

"magine the lag and delay in relaying commands... This would never work."

All speculation, but if just the video feed (lightbridge) is coming in at 6mbps - the plotted GPS data is a heck of a lot less than that.
I agree that most of the calcs are done in the Flight Controller - because that has to react real time to the data, but at the same time you can fit a lot of text data into even a 1mb/s stream.

So, there is a job for one of you brainiacs. Someone can probably install a sniffer of sorts on the USB cable to the device and tell us the total flow of data per second.
A really rough guess might be double the lightbridge? That would be 12 mb/s or more.

DJI has clearly stated that IOS and newer devices are the best to use - and they show as being 4X as fast as some of the slower Android models (more in some cases).

This is way above my pay grade - but I think we can all agree that very few, if any, apps need to so as much as the Pilot App.

Look here Jerry, They deserve every complaint they are getting! Why, because they were not ready for prime time with the launch of this product!!!  Now, my dealer has my money, and my Credit Card is making money, I'm making payments, for a Product that does not work!

Also, your wrong, It's clearly a firmware problem! Why, because all the things about turning this and that off and heat and processors taxed, does not exist in the 1.1.8  FW, Only in the 1.1.9 FW In any AOS of 4.4.2 or Lollipop 5.0.2  and many Approved and Unapproved Tablets and phones! It will be fixed with a Firmware upgrade, you can bet your sweet ass on that! But not to complain, Sorry dude they deserve it, and in my opinion, they should give us all a free battery once it gets fixed, and they should give us the Flight traing app, and they should give us the streaming capabilities, that were all promised at launch, bet you forgot about that!

Well said.  Android is a complex bag of hurt when it comes to processor intensive apps.  When the tablet's processor starts to get warm the tablet will throttle back on processor speed to cool it of... This results in reduced performance and possible video lag.  Some tablets run older OS versions.  Nothing is the same between different manufacturers.

Dialing down the lightbridge bandwidth setting might help a lot.
