Took the Mavic Air to the beach and was testing out the Active Track. All of a sudden the drone swoops down to the subject (dog) and then his buddy (another dog) takes out the drone. The unit has been replaced by DJI Care Refresh (case # CAS-2215004-N5B1L2).
Anyone else having this issue? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Which firmware is your Air using ?

Have a look in 'About' in General Settings Menu.

There has been a recent firmware update (v01.00.0500) that addresses some active track problems:-

"Fixed the issue where the aircraft behaved abnormally when it misidentified a subject in ActiveTrack."

Anyway happy that Dji gave to you another unit to fly again. Did you updated your firmware? I read about some firmware problems some days ago.

haha what a save by the other dog! thats awesome. This should be DJI's #1 priority. I know I would flip the hell out if my dog was hurt because of their mistakes.

Wow.....i was using this to active track my son. Going to have to think twice about it now.

Regardless of the failure of the Active Track, what were you doing? How come you didn’t hit Pause to stop it? If that had been a person, you would have been held responsible for any injury’s caused!

Assuming that you had .0400 FW installed (or earlier) this failure of Active Track has been reported by several people, there’s a thread on the subject somewhere. DJI’s Release Notes for .0500 FW suggests that this may have been addressed now.

Everybody needs to remember that you are solely responsible for the safe & controlled flying of their drone, not the SW that provides autominous flight modes!

My buddy's Mavic 2 Zoom was doing the same exact thing with him on several occasions before it eventually crashed while he was kayaking last week.

There seems to be an issue with Active Track lately.

Have seen other videos  who had the same problem with Active Track.
Glad to see no animals were harmed.
Thankfully the dog had a bodyguard who would take a bullet (MA) for him/her.

I was flying about 30 feet above, and of course I tried to stop it. Who wouldn't?

Straker, as the drone had replaced, please kindly refer to Aardvark's suggestion, update the firmware to the latest firmware v01.00.0500. Thank you.

30 feet is way too low over the general public, not exactly flying within the drone code! How did you try to “stop it”? In my experience the RC Pause button brings the drone to a standstill almost immediately.

Yeah - it's 50m/165' minimum altitude over small groups of people in the UK - unless they are 'in your control' meaning they know the drone is there and you have their permission.

I never expected Active Track to work with crowded areas and very dynamic movement, i managed to walk it through quite crowded area but very slowsly and closest as possible.
Funnt crash though.

Risky one you got away with that one. No harm done and hopefully lesson learned.

There is a misprint in the manual, that is actually called Active Attack mode.

Ouch, glad you're back flying.

The radar range finding failed?  Or does the Mavic have laser range finding so it can maintain the right distance from the subject?  Sammy Davis Jr. had famously poor depth perception due to having only one eye.  Software that uses one camera and maintains distance from the subject by the subjects appearance on the video is not foolproof.  It is a very weak method to determine and maintain distance though it is better than not having anything.

Active tracking is a mode to help photographers get a steady shot on a subject.  It does not relieve the pilot of his flying duties to monitor his aircraft's flight and take corrective action.  Glad Care Refresh replaced the drone caught by the dog.

Quite a few videos around YouTube showing the same issue.  As Aardvark mentions, DJI released a fix for this about a week ago in the v01.00.0500 firmware update.
