That's an awesome shot! And you are very brave to both be standing there and having Mavic up in the air!
Do post the other shot that you mentioned - where the lightning seems to be coming up from the ground. The first phase of a lightning strike actually goes from ground up, but it's usually weaker than the second phase and thus does not end up on the shots.
I've done some lightning photography with a DSLR, but my approach was to have an ND1000 filter and set for a long exposure during daytime or just a very long (up to 20 seconds) exposure during evenings/nights.

Thank you kindly. I will post the more images some time. On holiday at the moment. I never tried a ND1000 with my DSLR. Normally set it up, with slow shutter, and take a couple of images. Used Lee ND Grads though, for some of the images.
Was something else to do it with the Mavic. Was really just enjoying the wind, and drama of the thunderstorm. Love it.

We have big, rolling clouds, mighty thunder and heavy rainfall in most of our country. I love to spend time in the rain.

Thank you. To get lightning in a image is always a challenge. To get it with a drone, is awesome. I honestly did not think I would get even one lightning strike.

That's so awesome! was it just spamming the shutter button while there's lightning activity to get this shot?

Just about. Was surprised to get more than one image that was fairly in focus, with strikes. Couple of out of focus ones as well, more than good ones. Wind was blowing that small drone around like a piece of paper, at times. Fun, fun fun.

Amazing photo.  I've tried it last month while a superstorm was in St-Georges, UT without success.  The wind started blowing so hard that my MA couldn't hold position. I had to land it.

Gusts of wind was blowing that MA back and to the sides, for meters. I kept it lowish, and got a few in between wind blasts. Love the thunder and dramatic weather.
Go again, and leave the Air in the air. You would be surprised on how it stabilized itself when it gets hammered by wind.
