What a bad feeling.... He was so close to the island. It's very intersting and informative that He was able tofly for a couple of minutes with 0% battery.

Yes, looks like he lost line of sight (and signal) when he tried to land on the island beach. Maybe should have tried to hover over the island and let it autoland/crash. Hindsight I guess.

He was so, so close to making it back! Must be gutting for him. What a distance though - nearly six miles with no signal loss.

That's really sad to see. Also good to see what really happens at that critical point. I never have dare to risk that. Thanks for sharing

Always turn around at 65% and know your drone.
Nearly six miles though - he flew further in one flight than some people on here have ever flown

Yeah. It proves that DJI drones can fly much farther than advertised. I've flown 4.5km (2.7mi) away with my little spark, it was safely back to the homepoint with 13% battery then I let it auto land at 10%.
The whole flight was over sea and in windless conditions.
But I tested the hell out of the Spark's range before attempting this flight. Little by little I knew it was possible to do safely. You gotta fly low to avoid stronger winds and to not waste juice with accending and decending.
Just in case, I match the RTH altitude with the travelling altitude so it doesnt waste juice adjusting to a different altitude.   

I've done 8 km and back (total 16km) at 26% battery but this guy choose the sea and i see some wind (maybe). He's signal is not lost just battery depleted totally and drone turned off in mid-air just before land .. he was so close, i'm sorry about this accident.

On a side note, YouTube (including YouTube TV) has just suffered a global outage!

Just wondering what gave him the confidence to do a range TEST over water. Sounds like he would jump off a cliff and then half way down realize it's going to hurt.

We fly where we live.  Billy flew over Long Island Sound because he lives in the Northeast.  Not a lot of flat farmland so we do distance runs over water.  He just made the mistake of not paying attention to the wind direction.  45 mph on the way out would have given me pause.

Yes, this.  Always watch you speed on the way out.
