A little tip to assist some folk find a suitable flying location and not waste flying time.
Part of the fun of flying drones is finding new interesting locations. Time spent travelling to unknown new locations can and often often results in no flight time. So getting to a location and to discover that location conditions will prevent a safe flight can and is frustrating, and we have all been there and wasted time. Something as simple as knowing the direction of the sun can only assist in a successful flight/video!
So plan your flights, know your surroundings, and understand the challenges you might face in flight! A little Knowledge of the terrain you are flying in will tell you through a visual inspection of potential wind flow/directions caused by hills, tree formations. It will also help you identify dips and gullies, hills, high structures that may cause transmission issues as well as physical obstructions and other potential hazards, telephone poles, electrical pylons, farm livestock, houses etc. Make notes if you must, but do plan your flight.
Download apps such as UAV Forecast, Windy.com, local weather apps and check them on your inspection and without fail pre flight. Understanding wind direction, live wind speeds set at pre assigned heights, KP index, available visable satilites, and probale precipitaion can/will assist you in a safe return of your drone and prevent potential flyaways/crashes.
Proper preperation prevents poor performance........ So make a plan, this is better done in my opinion when the weather conditions prevent safe flights due to adverse wind, rain or poor light. Make a plan and fly safe
