I don't own a mavic zoom, but h.265 (High Efficiency Video Coding) is the more recent compression video algorithm compared to the older h.264 (aka Advanced Video Coding). Basically, the h.265 can produce equal video quality but with smaller file size (using less video bitrate).  Video file size with h.265 will be reduced at around 50% of what it would have been with h.264

Now one small issue i could think of with h.265 is just that as it's quite recent, some of older devices may not be able to read videos encoded with h.265. For instance, i own a LG TV which cannot read videos encoded with h.265 through it's internal video reader (used eg for viewing medias on USB sticks/HDDs).

Have a look at the sales pitch by DJI, about two thirds down the page is a brief description of H265 and a side by side comparison with H264 showing the improvement in detail.

AH, so that makes sense, basically a 2 gig file on H264 recording should be around 1 gig if recorded on H265?

Some good answers so far, so I only have a small bit to add...

As you can't change the bitrate of the video recording (100Mbps), both H.265 and H.264 will produce the same size file *but* the H.265 version will contain more detail.

When you learn a bit more about colour grading, etc you'll see that D-Cinelike or D-Log is required to give a flatter profile with more dynamic range when editing. If you pick any other profile (normal, vivid, etc), this is not the case so there's little point in there being a H.265 option.

Yup, more or less. You should just try for instance recording a same 30 second shot with both option succesively (using same color mode), and the h.265 file shoud be around twice smaller, without any real difference noticeable for the eye.

Edit : Reading theothernt's reply, the test i'm suggesting should then not result with smaller file as i didn't initially thought of the bitrate that you cannot change. Might be interesting to do the test just to confirm anyway.

Great explanation! Also worth mentioning not all computers can handle the H.265 codec either. But latest update of Premiere Pro seems to be handling it just fine!

Also you are only able to record H.265 while shooting with 10bit D-Log M color profile in DJI GO 4.
