Inspired by A CW and others lately on a golden hour kick.. I though I would throw up some of my first shots from my Mavic (have had the mavic less than a month).. still playing with this tiny sensor trying to see what can be squeezed out of it compared to a dslr rig

some shots are pulled from some 1080 video thats been through post and export from in some cases 2k ..some shot native 1080..

the native photos have not be fully de-noised as I am useing them mostly as comparitive examples against others cameras.. some shots are from my spark..

didnt want to hijack A CW thread but for those on a sunset kick as the fall lighting is great .. feel free to pile in with your shots..

any suggestions to squeeze more performance from this sensor that you experienced mavic jocks see lacking in my work feel free to chip in...

low light performance on my camera is extremely noisy .. very hot sensor.. above 400 iso

for the low lighting scenarios .. especially high dynamic range.. d-log seems almost essential to use (i prefer 1-0-0) so far for D-log on the pro.  The most dramatic effects for video seem to be to shoot at least 1 and sometimes (into the sun) 2 ev under exposed and recover in post.  over exposed even by .75ev don't seem to be recoverable as the detail is just gone .. burned away..

I go caught up a little later than I thought and there was a dense cloud bank that the sun set behind getting darker a bit faster than I 'calculated' for .. had a ND32 on and was getting -2 ev under as I was taking video at 2k 24 1/50 .. but just left it as it was a test run.. resulted in some of the test stills above.. came out better and had more definition in the bright areas than the 'properly exposed' footage..

one thing that is driving my nuts is that video where sun at back and sun at front on the same video.. grossly different .. and requires a very experienced hand (not me) at color and grading to try and match them up.. everything changes with this sensor dramatically based on light direction..

I am still trying to evaluate D-log and explore DJI's settings..

I have found with my limited editing skills in Resolve that D-Log 1-0-0 seems to net me the best results vs some that recommend going negative values

especially with sharpness.. DJI's use of aggressive noise algos start at Sharpness 0 and the negative effects with details in scenery shots can quite plainly be seen and are really bad at -1 and -2

taking the image too flat by setting contrast and saturation below 0 seems to loose detail and color channel information for me..

anyone else have something to say on D-Log?  what is your preferred setup and why... thanks..

In low light there is really no comparison to a DSLR, but I tell you what for the size of these little suckers they take some amazing photos (and videos) !


Overall I am VERY happy with the results I am getting and I have been shooting full frames for a very long time

Thanks Altus... sure I get it that I am shooting with a 2015ish iPhone style 12mp camera and that it has its limitations.. The one very dark shot was after sunset and stitched with autopano then color graded on my macbook quickly in iPhoto.. when I go back to the DNGs and import them into PS6 or LR5 I should have better noise reduction tools using adobe camera raw and can clean it up a bit better...

thanks Boss... have not had much playtime lately but using some downtime to learn modern video post / color grading etc with davinci.. never really done any serious video editing so its an old dog learning new tricks....

Good luck with that mate - not my bag these days but there are many credible editors on here who may lend some advice. Look forward to seeing the vids when you've finished them.
