Cool video, very nice light. Saw somewhere a couple of years ago, a big surfer dude from Australia, started this type of surfing. Can,t remember his name though. And also, it was not exactly the same system. This was a smaller board, that also ride above the waves.
Aloha Charissa,
Hydrofoils have been around for eons and applied to almost every form of activity over water. The hydrofoil surfboard was even attempted early in the 1960s but the supporting technology was not available at that time. The current design, as noted above, has been attributed to Laird Hamilton who introduced it in Australia and has been adapted to windsurfing, kitesailing, surfing, SUP and just about every other form of fast, natural power, human scale water sport.
The unique attribute of the current design (above) is the two sets of wings provide a longitudinal stability that brought foiling under control. Besides Laird Hamilton, Rick Naish and his son Robby Naish and Mango Carafino, all from Hawai'i, among others World-wide contributed to this fast and smooth form of watersport.
Laird Hamilton developed the surf hydrofoil as a means to surf the Phantom 100 Foot Wave. This pursuit of extreme watersport is documented in the book "The Wave by Susan Casey. Please remember that many individuals were involved in the evolution of the surfboard and all the resulting watersports. But Laird specifically worked to design the hydrofoil surfboard to surf extreme giant waves. Many others contributed to the evolution of the hydrofoil surfboard and its use in the various watersports. Also remember that watersports involving waves over about 30 feet generally involve a tow-in source like wind-power or watercraft.
Good to see there is such interest in Hawai'i contributions to extreme watersport!
Aloha and Drone On! |
