Aloha,

Finally a nice evening for a flight in the mountains with my Good Old P4.  Sorry, no music or sound.  The flight shows an unusual perspective of the Pali.

So long since I got to fly my P4.  The flight showed the need for a gimbal calibration.  Fortunately, the flight was short enough to allow a calibration when I landed.

Aloha and Drone On!

Aloha Chas,

It seems you are really getting a kick out of our snow.  The name Mauna Kea mean White Mountain and is named "White" for the snow that falls there most winters.  Mauna Loa also gets snow.  Now Haleakala only gets snow rarely.  The big story about Haleakala is that the snow fell down 4000 feet from the top (10,000 feet).

The temperature reached 57 degrees in my back yard.  I could not fly because I was frozen!  (And it was nighttime.)

Aloha Chas,

Yes, the big deal was the level at how low the snow got on Haleakala (4000 feet below the summit).  I have only heard about it a few times.

I went for a walk today, probably 30 city blocks. Thankfully it was only -19*C. ;-)

At your +60*F, it’s much like our warm summer days here. Hahaha

Hoodie? I had five layers on top, long Johns, under double layer combat pants, two pairs of socks, in my hunting boots, and a scarf, under my leather coat... heavy holofil  insulated gloves and a thick wool toque.

It felt warm, comfortable and I only wish I had started the walk earlier... really a nice day here.

Stay warm, Ken. ;-)

Your moist cold and our dry frost are two different climates.

No, you wouldn’t last 20min. out there, in this deep freeze. It’s frigid.

You can spit and it hits the ground ice.

Aloha wombat,

Interesting that you should notice that!  One vegetation line is at 1640 feet - 500 meters.  I tried to go up and see what the new vegetation was like and reached the computer limited altitude of my Phantom.

BTW, the cliff faces are very unstable.  No cliff climbing here.  The black parts of the faces are recent shaves where the cliff face has split off and the black is the algae on the fresh, new surface.

     Glad you liked it!

Aloha GS2,

Mahalo!  It really is fun up there.  We have had a lot of bad weather lately though.  It looks like I might get another shot tomorrow at some nice conditions.

This is the Windward side of the island of Oahu (Honolulu is on the other side) where it rains all the time the trade winds blow strong.  But when it is nice, it is real fun!

Aloha GurryAzzy,

Mahalo!  You should see the weird winds those steep cliffs cause.  From the ocean, they create something of a calm area in a pocket of sorts.  But from the other side, the winds create voids that cause winds three times the speed of the wind coming over the mountain.  And those gusty winds are across the face of the cliffs and travel in one direction and then for five minutes or so there is calm and then those gusts are coming from the opposite direction.  Pretty wild!

Aloha and Drone On!
