Just had my first conversation with a Class G airport in New Jersey (USA).   It could have/should have been more pleasant.  I am sure many people dont understand that they are within 5 miles of an airport or are afraid to call.  They should be happy I was following the rules..   Regardless... I was simply told to keep it under 400 feet to which I replied I always do.  I had my exact coordinates ready, but she didn't ask for that or for my name or when I was flying.  

It was easy, so do it when you are flying under rec rules and have your coordinates ready... you can ask your phone for your exact location in Lat/longitude.. which I had figured out ahead of time.  You really aren't supposed to have to ask, but I did just to be polite.  

Everyone should just get their UAV Certification  then there is no need to call and you will be confident about the location and altitude of aircraft when you are close to a class G airport.  I've really enjoyed the course I took.. taking the test saturday.

Much better experience today .   I was flying within 5 miles of Princeton Regional Airport in NJ  .  Called and they were very professional  They asked how long I’d be flying and how high.  I said under 400 feet for 45 minutes.  They said no problem.

I ended mostly flying a few feet above water taking pictures of a bridge built in 1790

Manned A/C have an altitude restriction of 1,500’ AGL over what they describe as a  congested area unless they are in the pattern or departing an airport.  The FAA has ruled in a case that the Oregon Coast is a congested area, so I’d guess all of NJ would fall into their definition.

Wingspan of c182 is 36’ so 50’ is crazy close.   A goose has a emergency dive technique where they tuck one wing.  They drop like a manhole cover.  And they would do that if things got this close.  

They are should be courteous, you’re giving them notice, and plenty of airspace separation.
