I'm paranoid about my Mavic dropping in water and sinking so I 3D printed some floats for it. I've taken off from floating but aside from landing in a shallow puddle, I haven't attempted a full ditch just yet. That said, I felt confident enough to go sufficiently low that you can see the ripples from the downdraught. I had the gimbal cover on which didn't help with glare but with the bright sunlight and water anyway I think it would have struggled
The extremely low height at the end of this almost one year old video was not an attempt to be brave. It was a great deal of luck more than my sense that it didn't go wrong. But low flight over water it was.

Here is a shot out at sea.
At 2.02 you can guess the height above waves. Remember, the controller is on shore where the vid starts.
The second vid,
shows a close pass over water and rock. The currents around the rocks are the fastest in the world, so this bit of rock is practically inaccessible by boat.
The third one is intended to shock and confuse.
I know many out there will hate this apparent cruel treatment of a drone, but I can assure you, no drones, fish or birds were harmed. I value my drone too much to be wrecked. It looks worse than it actually was.

I cut some lengths of pipe insulation that happened to fit perfectly. Possibly a bit heavier than empty bottles but I had it lying around. Measured a fairly random length and tested it in some shallow water. Had to shift the floats forward a bit to get the balance right so worth doing this before you wire or tape them in place. I doubt they'd survive a crash from altitude - thought about putting a strap round, but in order to avoid obscuring the ultrasonic sensors it would have to press on the battery release buttons (which might not be a problem if it's tight enough)

Had issues trying to remove the supports from inside the clip recess. I printed them in PETG. The central plate is a great fit.
Reminds me, I need to print some new legs having damaged one of mine in a crash
Yeah, the model understandably looks quite thin in areas so can see removing supports being tricky.
Which Mavic does this fit to? Which Mavic do you fly?

Mavic Pro
Aside from a tiny support for the front clip, I didn't need any other support material. You can see in the comments on Thingiverse that I had to add some duct tape in as the sockets all split. Quite surreal taking off from the water

I just bought an Air, I suspect this may not fit?!
cool spandit - would love to see the floats you printed.
Flying low over water produces great footage..but the risk is high
i think my favourite personal video clips are those where i have flown low over water.
Each time i think my heart lost a few years but it was some of the best fun ive had.
1st is slow flight low over water with a few nice segments of low altitude shots
2nd is pretty low down at full speed chasing a boat - that was very nerve raking :-)
